Southeastern Improves to 3-1 With 5-2 Victory Over Southern

Kaltenbacher, Raygadas lead Lions to win

Box Score

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Dany Raygadas and junior Margaux Kaltenbacher each won in both singles and doubles play to help the Lion tennis team to a 5-2 non-conference victory over Southern Thursday afternoon at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions won two doubles matches and four singles matches to improve to 3-1 this spring. The visiting Lady Jaguars fell to 0-3 overall.

In doubles play, Kaltenbacher and Raygadas gave Southeastern an early advantage, improving to 3-1 with a 6-2 victory over SU's Mia Kent and D'Jeri Raymond on the No. 3 court. At No. 2, sophomores Lucia Bustamante and Ceci Mercier (3-1) clinched the doubles point and a 1-0 Lion lead by defeating the Lady Jaguar duo of Kendall Bunch and Laura Syori, 6-2.

Southeastern played in singles play without senior Renee Villarreal, who normally plays No. 1, and all of its players have to move up a spot. Raygadas ran her team-best singles record to 4-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 win on court 2 to give Southeastern a 2-0 lead.

Sophomore Madina Vorotnikova (1-0) made her 2016 singles debut at No. 4, putting Southeastern closer to victory with a 6-3, 6-3 sweep of Kent. Southern countered with a straight-set win at No. 1 to pull within 3-1.

Like Vorotnikova, sophomore Natalie Duran (1-0) made her singles debut on Thursday. Duran clinched the Lion win on the No. 5 court by outlasting Nicki Neal, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3).

The final two singles matches were settled by third-set super tiebreakers. At No. 6, Kaltenbacher rallied past Raymond, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 10-7. Southern cut the final margin on the No. 3 court, as Rufaro Chirewa shook off a first set loss for a 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 10-6 win over Mercier.

Southeastern will make its road debut on Sunday, traveling to Southern Miss for a 1 p.m. match in Hattiesburg, Miss.
