HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana soccer team placed five student-athletes on the preseason All-Southland Conference teams, which were released by the league office on Tuesday.
Representing the Lady Lions on the first team were junior forward
Bri Singh and junior goalkeeper
Hope Sabadash. Three SLU players earned second team notice – Senior forward
Kayla Vera, junior midfielder
Katie Noonan and senior defender
Cheyenne Maxwell.
"Our program is excited for the five individuals that have been honored by the conference office," Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle said. "All five bring specific skills and tools that will help make us successful as a team. The individual honors for each are made possible by the play and support of their teammates that push them to improve daily."
Singh, who hails from Lancaster, California, is coming off a sophomore season that saw her earn first team All-Louisiana and second team All-Southland Conference honors. She led the Southland Conference with 13 goals and 29 points in 2014 and enters her junior year eighth in school history with 22 career goals.
Singh is joined on the first team by Sabadash, a Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native. The 2013 Southland Freshman of the Year and Tournament MVP is back to full health after a sophomore season that saw her miss eight matches. Sabadash was 9-3 in net before suffering her injury last season.
Vera, a Vancouver, Washington product, will team with Singh to give Southeastern a potent attack up top. Last season, she finished second on the team with seven goals scored.
Noonan, who hails from Renton, Washington, was a second team All-Southland choice after a breakout sophomore season. She led the Southland with 10 assists in 2014 – the fourth-highest single-season total in school history.
Rounding out the Southeastern contingent is the ever-consistent Maxwell, a Sacramento, California native. Maxwell has been a stalwart in the midfield and backfield throughout her career and enters her senior season as one of the team's defensive leaders.
The Lady Lions will open their 2015 schedule on Aug. 21, hosting Jackson State at 7 p.m. under the lights of Strawberry Stadium.
