Lions Place Program-Record Five Players On All-Louisiana Teams

Scioneaux, Seward earn first-team honors

HAMMOND, La. – After a record-setting season in 2015, Southeastern Louisiana placed a program-record five players on the All-Louisiana College Baseball Team selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Pitcher Tate Scioneaux and outfielder Jacob Seward were named to the first team, while first baseman Kevin Carr, designated hitter Daniel Midyett and pitcher Kyle Cedotal were second-team selections.

All five played key roles for the Lions, who finished 42-17 overall and 25-5 in the Southland Conference, setting the school record for overall wins and the Southland record for conference wins on the way to claiming the conference's regular-season championship.

Scioneaux tossed three-consecutive shutouts to close out the regular season, eventually stretching his streak to a Lion-record 36.1 scoreless innings in a row. This season he became Southeastern's all-time leader in innings pitched (317.1). Scioneaux has the third-most wins in school history (23), needing two to tie for first, and is second all-time in strikeouts (260).

A junior from Reserve, Louisiana, Scioneaux was a 39th-round selection of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the recent Major League Baseball first-year player draft. He was named the Louisiana Pitcher of the week in back-to-back weeks, May 4 and May 11.

Seward ranked among the Southland's top-eight players in six different categories. The sophomore from New Orleans, Louisiana, ranked second runs scored (47), third in stolen bases (19), batting average (.350) and on-base percentage (.442), sixth in hits (74) and eighth with 35 RBIs.

One of the toughest batters in the nation to strike out, Seward fanned just 13 times in 217 at bats this season. He drew 25 walks and was hit by a pitch 13 times. Seward led the Lions with 19 stolen bases. His offensive efforts helped pace Southeastern to a Southland-best .299 batting average, 599 hits and 373 run scored.

Carr, a senior from Chandler, Arizona, hit .336 with 15 doubles, a triple, four home runs and 36 RBIs. He drew 19 walks and was hit by a pitch 15 times, compiling a .424 on-base percentage. Carr placed in the top-10 of eight Southland offensive categories. He led the conference in HBPs, was third in doubles, fourth in on-base percentage, fifth in total bases (103), seventh in hits and RBIs, eighth in batting average and 10th in slugging percentage.

A junior from Denham Springs, Louisiana, Cedotal excelled on the mound for Southeastern, compiling a 9-2 record and 2.08 ERA. The left-hander fanned 95 batters in 99.2 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .219 batting average. He finished with the second-most wins and third-most strikeouts in the Southland. Cedotal was also named the Louisiana Pitcher of the Week and a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball newspaper earlier this year (March 16).

Midyett hit .306 with nine doubles, a pair of triples, eight home runs and a conference-best 46 RBIs. The junior designated hitter from Shreveport, Louisiana, scored 42 runs, third-most on the team and in the Southland. An All-Conference selection, Midyett compiled a .411 on-base percentage with 12 HBPs and a team-high 30 walks.

Ten different programs in the state were represented on the two teams as LSU led the way with a combined eight players named to both squads. The Tigers also nabbed four of the five special awards, while UL Lafayette and Southeastern followed up with five selections on both the first and second teams.

The teams were selected on the basis of nominations made by the sports information and media relations contacts from the four-year baseball playing schools in the state. The list of nominations, based on stats and honors accumulated through the conference tournaments, was voted on by a panel of media and sports information representatives who are LSWA members.

LSU's Alex Lange earned both Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors, while Tiger shortstop Alex Bregman was voted Player of the Year by the LSWA. UL-Lafayette second baseman Stefan Trosclair was voted Newcomer of the Year following his breakout season for the Ragin' Cajuns in 2015.

Five different coaches from the state were nominated for Coach of the Year, which was awarded to LSU skipper Paul Mainieri (14 votes) for the fifth time in his nine seasons with the Tigers. UL-Lafayette's Tony Robichaux (5), Southeastern's Matt Riser (3) and Tulane's David Pierce (3) also received votes on the ballot.

In addition to LSU's Lange earning Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards, the right-hander was a first team selection by the LSWA along with five of his teammates, including Kade Scivicque (C), Chris Chinea (1B), Alex Bregman (SS), Conner Hale (3B) and Andrew Stevenson (OF).

UL Lafayette had two first team selections with Tyler Girouard (Utility) and Stefan Trosclair (2B) being named to the squad, while Southeastern had pitcher Tate Scioneaux and outfielder Jacob Seward voted to the All-Louisiana first team. Rounding out the first team honorees was LSU-Alexandria pitcher Adam Hines, Nicholls hurler Justin Sinibaldi and Northwestern State outfielder Cort Brinson.
