SLU Opens Home Stand With 5-2 Victory Over Bradley

Lions improve to 6-2 with non-conference victory

Southeastern Louisiana 5, Bradley 2 - Results

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's tennis team opened its five-match home stand with a 5-2 victory over Bradley Monday night at the Southeastern Tennis Complex.

The Lions improved to 6-2 overall with the victory. Bradley picked up wins on the No. 2 and 3 singles courts, but fell to 8-6 overall with the loss.

"We have a lot of tennis ahead of us this week, so it was great to get off to a good start against a good, well-coached Bradley team," Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. "One thing I can say for our group is that this is the most coachable team I've had, which I think will really help us as the spring continues."

Southeastern switched up its doubles pairings for the first time this spring, netting very positive results. At No. 1, Lion junior Renee Villarreal and freshman Lucia Bustamante rolled past Alexa Brandt and Ashley Thai, 8-1. SLU closed out the point on the No. 3 court, as sophomore Margaux Kaltenbacher and freshman Dany Raygadas defeated the Bradley duo of Elizabeth Przystawski and Cassia Wojtalik, 8-0.

Villarreal gave the Lions a 2-0 lead on the No. 1 court, improving to 8-0 this spring in singles play. Improving to 47-4 in her career as a Lion, Villarreal overwhelmed Brandt, 6-4, 6-0.

Raygadas (6-1) extended her singles winning streak to five matches with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Wojtalik on the No. 5 court. At No. 6, SLU freshman Madina Vorotnikova (6-1) clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Przystawski to match Raygadas with her fifth consecutive singles victory.

Closing out the scoring for the Lions was Kaltenbacher. At No. 4, she outlasted Thai, 7-5, 6-4, to improve to 3-4 this spring.

"It was a tough match," Kaltenbacher said. "Every time I would pull ahead, she would make some amazing shots to comeback. I fought as hard as I could and it feels great to win."

Southeastern will be back in action on Tuesday, hosting Southeastern Missouri at 8 p.m. at the Southeastern Tennis Complex. The match was originally scheduled for Wednesday at 1 p.m., but with expected rain on Wednesday, the two teams decided to move the contest up a day.
