Sabadash, Hornbuckle earn top honors on All-Louisiana team

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team continued to be rewarded for its championship 2015 season Saturday with the release of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's All-Louisiana team.

Junior goalkeeper Hope Sabadash shared state Player of the Year honors while head coach Blake Hornbuckle was named Co-Coach of the Year. Senior midfielder Gisenia Utreras joined Sabadash on the All-Louisiana first team while senior defender Maddie Allen and sophomore midfielder Maggie Ramsey were honorable mention selections.

"I think when your team accomplishes (its goals), individuals are going to get recognized," Hornbuckle said. "We are so pleased for all the individuals who do get recognized. It's also a culmination of all the work from everyone on the team who helps them in that regard. We are very pleased for the program. It takes nothing away from the individual accomplishment. We're very pleased for what each has accomplished."

Sabadash shared Player of the Year honors with LSU sophomore forward Jorian Baucom, earning first-team All-Louisiana honors for the third straight season.

"I think it's a very fitting reward for a dynamic player," Hornbuckle said. "Hope has such a charisma on the field. She has a commanding presence and really keeps everybody in front of her organized and is a big backbone for our team."

It was the latest in a long line of honors this season for the Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native. She was earlier one of four goalkeepers nationally selected to the three-team NSCAA Division I All-America squad. She earned first-team All-Central honors for the second time in her career and was also a first-team All-Southland Conference selection and was named the MVP of the Southland Tournament. In addition, she was named the Southland Goalkeeper of the Week for the weeks of Sept. 8 and Oct. 27.

Sabadash led the Southland with a .83 goals against average and 10 shutouts and was third with a .849 save percentage and 107 saves. She was at her best in the Lady Lions' biggest matches, making seven saves in a 3-0 loss at No. 1 Florida State early in the regular season and 11 in a 1-0 loss at Auburn in the first round of the NCAA Women's College Cup.

Sabadash helped guide Southeastern to the SLC Tournament title after allowing one goal and recording 21 saves in the three-game sweep. Eight of the saves came in the final as the Lady Lions defeated Sam Houston State on penalty kicks with Sabadash making a pair of saves in the penalty kick phase.

Sabadash is currently tied for second in Southeastern history with 24 shutouts and fourth with 279 career saves.

Hornbuckle and LSU's Brian Lee were named Co-Coaches of the Year. Hornbuckle won the honor for the seventh time in his career after leading the Lady Lions to a 13-5-4 record and their fourth Southland Conference Tournament championship. Southeastern advanced to the NCAA Division I Women's College Cup for the third time, falling to 19th-ranked Auburn 1-0 in the first round.

Utreras closed out her Southeastern career with her first All-Louisiana honor. The Brampton, Ontario, Canada native earlier earned All-Southland Conference first team honors after ranking first in the Southland with 33 points while tying for the league lead with nine assists. She was also second with 66 shots and tied for second with 12 goals and four game-winning goals. She finished the season ranked in the Lady Lions' top 10 in all five categories.

Utreras made the All-SLC Tournament team after scoring a goal and recording two assists. She also connected during the penalty kick phase against Sam Houston in the finals. During the regular season, Utreras had a seven-point game in the Lady Lions' 7-1 win over Incarnate Word with three goals and an assist and had three assists in a 5-2 win at Mississippi Valley State.

"I think it's a wonderful honor for Gisenia," Hornbuckle said. "To lead the conference in total points from an attacking mid role is a great accomplishment. It means she's extremely involved and she provides a strong attacking presence while working on both sides of the ball."

Allen received second-team All-Southland Conference recognition after helping the Lady Lions record a league-best 0.83 GAA and 10 shutouts this season. The Ottawa, Ontario, Canada native was selected to the All-Southland Conference Tournament. She also had two assists and two points in 22 matches and was the conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 27.

"What a great way to end a career," Hornbuckle said of Allen receiving the honor. "She was very confident, very organized in the back and did a fantastic job of keeping attackers away from the goal with her speed and one-on-one defending ability."

Ramsey made the All-Louisiana team for the second time in her career. The Mission Viejo, California native finished second on the Southeastern team and tied for eighth in the Southland with seven goals. She was also third in the league with 60 shots and tied for fourth with three game-winning goals. The last of those game winners came in the Lady Lions' 1-0 win over top-seeded Stephen F. Austin in the semifinals of the conference tournament. She was named to the All-Tournament team after scoring twice in the three games.

Ramsey also had eventual game winners in a 6-0 win over Texas Southern and a 7-1 win against Incarnate Word.

"Maggie Ramsey had a fantastic end of the season with creating opportunities and finishing balls," Hornbuckle said. "She really pushed us through in games and we're looking forward to two more great years with her."

LSU freshman defender Alex Thomas was named the state's top freshman, while McNeese State junior midfielder Bettina Brulhart was selected Louisiana Newcomer of the Year.

LSU led the state with three first-team selections, while Southeastern, McNeese State and Louisiana Tech each had two representatives. Nicholls and Northwestern State each had one pick each.
