HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team will wrap up its regular season in Lake Charles, La. against conference rival McNeese Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Lady Lions (5-7-4, 4-3-2 SLC) will close out its final regular season match on the road against McNeese (4-10-4, 3-4-2 SLC). Thursday's match against the Cowgirls will be televised on ESPN+ and live stats, provided by the hosts, can be accessed on the women's soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
SLU is seeking to extend its winning streak and solidify its position in the 2025 Southland Conference Soccer Tournament. The Lady Lions finished 1-0 last week with a 2-1 victory over HCU at home. Southeastern gained the upper hand early in the match, but the Huskies continued to battle. Junior Brooke Opferman recorded her first goal of the season to help SLU claim the lead while freshman Alexandra Knight posted her fourth goal to lead the team in scoring.
Junior goalkeeper Kendall Curran secured two saves in the match against the Huskies and currently leads the conference with 151 saves this season. The Brentwood, Tenn. native also ranks third in the league in shutouts (6) and saves per game (4.47). Southeastern has recorded 18 goals, 154 shots and 71 shots on goal this season while tallying 13 assists.
McNeese finished 0-1-1 last weekend after tying 1-1 with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi before falling 1-0 to HCU on the road. Freshman forward Rhiannon Maynes-Tourond scored the lone goal of the weekend for the Cowgirls as she leads the team with six goals and two assists. Redshirt junior Alexi Pitt follows up with two goals for McNeese as she has taken 11 shots with seven shots on goal.
The Cowgirls have posted 17 goals, 169 shots and 78 shots on goal this season with 14 assists as they tie for sixth in the conference standings. Celeste Marijnissen handles the majority of the responsibility in the net for McNeese alongside Elizabeth Meisner and Shannon Dempsey with 109 saves combined. Marijnissen holds a 75.2 save percentage and 2.14 goals against average.
Southeastern, with a victory over McNeese, could secure its position in the 2025 Southland Conference Women's Soccer Tournament within the top five of league standings. The SLC Women's Soccer Tournament will take place in Beaumont, Texas at the Lamar University Soccer Complex. All matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
