SLU Closes Non-Conference Play With 9-0 Shutout of MVSU

Noonan, Singh top performers as Lady Lions improve to 7-1 overall

Box Score

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule on a high note, rolling to a 9-0 victory over Mississippi Valley State Monday afternoon at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.

Eight different Lady Lions found the net, as SLU improved to 7-1 overall. Mississippi Valley State dropped to 0-6 with the loss.

Sophomore Bri Singh led the Lady Lions with two goals, while freshman Maggie Ramsey, junior Cheyenne Maxwell and junior Kayla Vera each found the net. Four Southeastern players – junior Megan Simon, freshman Maddie Kresevic, freshman Ana Zadro and freshman Kim Porche – scored the first collegiate goals of their careers.

Sophomore Katie Noonan chipped in with three assists to run her team-high season total to seven. Singh, Ramsey, Simon, junior Gisenia Utreras and sophomore Amber Lasher each also were credited with assists for SLU.

Every Lady Lion who was dressed saw action. Sophomores Hope Sabadash and Casey Jeanfreau split time in goal, as Southeastern posted its sixth shutout of the season.

"We were very pleased with the effort today," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle commented. "We moved the ball well and were able to finish the opportunities we created. We were able to give some players some experience, while allowing our starters to have an opportunity to rest."

Noonan's patented long throw-in led to Southeastern's first goal less than two minutes into the match. Ramsey was able to get a foot on the ball that MVSU failed to clear, scoring from close range. The Mission Viejo, California native's sixth goal of the season put the Lady Lions up, 1-0.

In the 13th minute, Singh stole the ball from MVSU and passed to Ramsey who played a ball ahead to a streaking Maxwell. The Sacramento, California native calmly deposited her third goal of the season into the back of the net for a 2-0 SLU lead.

Singh got into the scoring act less than two minutes later, as she got just enough of a foot on a pass from Utreras to give the Lady Lions a 3-0 advantage less than 14 minutes into the match.

Vera drilled an unassisted goal in the 18th minute, as the Vancouver, Washington native pushed the lead to 4-0 with her fourth goal of the season. Exactly a minute later, Singh scored off another Noonan throw-in to put Southeastern up, 5-0. The goal was the team-high ninth of the season for the Lancaster, California native, already matching her 2013 season total.

Zadro closed out the Southeastern first-half scoring in the 24th minute, taking a Noonan pass and finishing from close range. The Mississauga, Ontario, Canada native's first career goal sent Southeastern into the break with a commanding 6-0 lead.

A beautiful combination resulted in Southeastern's first goal of the second half in the 52nd minute. Simon played a ball into Lasher, who tapped it right to Kresevic. The Solon, Ohio native deposited the ball into the net for a 7-0 SLU lead.

In the 61st minute, Simon hit a beautiful shot into the upper right corner of the net. The Mandeville native and Fontainebleau High School alum pushed the Lady Lion edge to 8-0.

Another Louisiana product, Porche, capped the scoring in the 63rd minute. The Luling native who prepped at Academy of Our Lady High School scored unassisted to provide the final 9-0 margin.

Southeastern will be back in action on Friday, hosting Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 4 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
