Lady Lions Open SLC Tournament Run Against Lamar

No. 3 Southeastern begins its run in the quarterfinals of the SLC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament against No. 6 Lamar Tuesday at 7 p.m.

HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women's soccer team will open postseason play Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Southland Conference Women's Soccer Championship Tournament against Lamar in Beaumont, Texas.

No. 3 Southeastern (6-7-4, 5-3-2 SLC) will face No. 6 Lamar (6-7-5, 3-3-4 SLC) in the quarterfinals of the SLC Tournament. The match between SLU and the Cardinals will be televised on ESPN+ and live stats, provided by the conference, can be accessed on the women's soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net.

The Lady Lions closed out the regular season solidifying its position within the top three teams in the league after extending its two-match winning streak. Southeastern defeated conference rival McNeese 2-1 to end its final conference match with a victory on the road. Junior Brooke Opferman connected in the back of the net for SLU to gain an early lead to record two goals this season. The Lady Lions compounded their lead midway through the second half as an own goal was credited to the visitors to finalize the match.

SLU has recorded 20 goals this season led by freshman Alexandra Knight with four goals off 12 shots and eight shots on goal. Senior Emma Ramsey and Aja Nelson have also stepped up as offensive threats for Southeastern, each with three goals, to contribute to its depth. Lady Lion goalkeeper Kendall Curran led the team in minutes played, posting 1,530 minutes in net with 88 saves. Curran led the conference in saves while ranking third in saves per game (4.62) and shutouts combined (0.03).

In its last match against Lamar, SLU suffered a 1-0 loss on the road midway through league play. Sophomore transfer Lauren Fincher claimed the lone goal in the match for the Cardinals. 

Lamar ended the regular season with a 3-1 loss to UTRGV on the road. Erin Dull connected in the net for her first goal of the season while claiming the lone goal for the Cardinals to avoid the shutout. Lamar secured 33 goals this season led by SLC Newcomer and Forward of the Year Lauren Smith with 12 goals.

SLC First Team All-Conference performers Kam Jalayer and Sydney Williams combined for four goals and nine assists to also be key contributors for the Cardinals. Eloise Bywater handled the majority of the responsibility in the net this season for Lamar with 47 saves and a 1.52 goals against average.

Contingent on the results of Tuesday's match, SLU can advance to the semifinals of the SLC Tournament. With a win over Lamar, Southeastern will face the winner of No. 2 SFA versus No. 7 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Thursday at 7 p.m. All matches will take place in Beaumont, Texas at the Lamar University Soccer Complex and will be streamed on ESPN+.
