SLU Improves to 3-0 With 9-0 Triumph at Alcorn State

Twelve Lady Lions either score goal or record assist in third straight shutout victory

LORMAN, Miss. – The defending Southland Conference Tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team continued its undefeated start to the 2014 season with a 9-0 victory over Alcorn State Thursday night at Spinks-Casem Stadium.
 
Southeastern (3-0) controlled from the onset in the match. Alcorn State fell to 0-1 overall in its season opener, as the Lady Lions finished with a 25-2 shot advantage in the match.
 
"We came out sharp from the beginning and we did a nice job throughout the match on connecting our passes and getting into the attack," Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. "Overall we were pleased with the effort."
 
Sophomore Bri Singh led Southeastern with two goals to run her team-high season total to four goals. Junior Cheyenne Maxwell, junior Erin Christ, freshman Maggie Ramsey, sophomore Amber Lasher, junior Kayla Vera, sophomore Katie Noonan and sophomore Lauren Lorentz all scored goals for the Lady Lions.
 
Noonan and senior Chelsea Villaescusa were the top distributors for Southeastern, finishing with two assists apiece. Singh, Ramsey, freshman Lauren Marler, junior Gisenia Utreras and junior Maddie Allen were each credited with an assist each.
 
Villaescusa, Christ, senior Jen Babcock, sophomore Alexsis Cable and freshman Lauren Babcock all played a part on a back line that limited ASU's offensive opportunities. Sophomore goalkeeper Hope Sabadash posted her third straight shutout of the fall, finishing with one save.
 
Southeastern put together all the offense it needed 50 seconds into the match. Singh took a feed from Ramsey and deposited a shot for the game-winning with 89 minutes and change left in the match.
 
The Lady Lions padded their lead in the eighth minute. Maxwell took a feed from Noonan and netted her second goal of the season to double the SLU lead. Just over three minutes later, Christ headed in a Villaescusa corner kick to push the advantage to 3-0.
 
Ramsey got into the scoring act in the 22nd minute, finishing a run that also included Singh and Villaescusa. Her second goal of the season was followed 30 seconds later by Singh's second goal of the match. Lasher closed out the first half scoring in the 34th minute, as she knocked in a pass from Marler to send SLU to the break with a commanding 6-0 advantage.
 
Vera started the second half scoring in spectacular fashion, driving down the right side and drilled a shot past Alcorn State keeper Maegan Aria. Her first goal of the season extended the Southeastern lead to 7-0.
 
In the 66th minute, Noonan netted a cross from Utreras. Lorentz closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute, scoring off a pass from Allen.
 
Southeastern will look to move to 4-0 on Sunday, when it travels to Texas Southern for a 1 p.m. match in Houston, Texas.
