Lions Come Up Short At No. 2-Ranked Louisiana-Lafayette

Southeastern hosts Southland-leader Nicholls State Friday

Box Score

LAFAYETTE, La. – Southeastern Louisiana came up short in a high-scoring game against the No. 2-ranked Ragin' Cajuns of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette Wednesday, falling 10-8 at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.

Southeastern (27-19) produced 12 hits, its second-straight game with double-digit hits, but could not overcome a six-run deficit.

The Lions wiped out a 2-0 Louisiana-Lafayette lead in the second. Sam Roberson led off the inning with a single to left, moved up on a walk to Kyle Cedotal and scored on a double down the right-field line by Lafayette native Kennon Menard. Cedotal scored on Jacob Williams' ground out to second base and Menard scored on Jacob Seward's sacrifice fly to right.

ULL responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead.

Southeastern cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the top of the fifth. Andrew Godbold smacked a one-out double to left and scored on Brett Hoffman's single to left-center.

The Ragin' Cajuns answered again, but this time with four runs, in their half of the fifth. They added an unearned run in the sixth to stretch their lead to six runs, 10-4.

Loading the bases with no outs in the seventh, the Lions clawed back in the game on a towering grand slam off the bat of Roberson, bringing Southeastern within 10-8.

Roberson singled with one out in the ninth, but ULL reliever Seth Harrison struck out Cedotal and Menard to end the game.

Ben Carter (1-0), the second of six Ragin' Cajun pitchers, earned the win and Harrison picked up his first save of the season. Gabe Von Rosenberg (1-1) was saddled with the loss. Southeastern has dropped six-consecutive games, its longest losing streak since it lost six straight from March 25-April 1, 2007.

Hoffman, Menard, Midyett and Roberson all recorded multi-hit games, with Hoffman and Roberson posting three hits each.

The Lions returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday against Nicholls State at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
