Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – Andrew Godbold smashed a three-run home run off the scoreboard high above the left-center field wall Saturday to power Southeastern Louisiana to a 5-3 victory over the University of New Orleans at Maestri Field at First NBC Ballpark.
Southeastern (27-13, 12-6 Southland) swept the series from UNO (10-26, 2-16 Southland) and maintains a share of first place in the Southland Conference.
Trailing 1-0 entering the third inning, catcher
Sam Roberson led off with a double into the left-center gap. Following a walk to
Jameson Fisher, Godbold crushed a 1-1 offering from Privateer starting pitcher Darron McKigney (1-7) off the upper portion of the scoreboard to give the Lions a 3-1 lead.
UNO scratched back within a run in the bottom of the inning. With runners at first and second, cleanup hitter Hezekiah Randolph doubled to right field. One run scored, but left fielder Reese Kanter collided with Roberson at the plate and was called out in addition to being ejected from the game.
Jacob Williams scored Southeastern's fourth run on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly. He led off the inning chopping an infield single and moved to second base when
Jacob Seward drew a walk. Williams took third on a Roberson fly ball and then scored on Fisher's fly to left.
The Privateers cut Southeastern's lead to one once again with an unearned run in the eighth off
Mason Klotz. Zach Liberto led off the inning with a single through the left side and moved to second on a passed ball. Following a walk and a single, Liberto scored on another passed ball. After fanning back-to-back hitters, Klotz issued a walk to load the bases. He worked out of it without suffering any further damage, getting the designated hitter to ground out to first.
Jesse Buratt scored the final run of the game after drawing a walk to lead off the ninth.
Kennon Menard sacrificed Buratt to second and
Kyle Cedotal followed with an RBI single to up the middle.
Tate Scioneaux (6-3) snapped a personal three-game skid, earning the win after allowing two runs in seven innings of work. The sophomore right-hander walked one and fanned six. Klotz picked up his fourth save of the season, allowing one unearned run in two innings of relief. McKigney was tagged with the loss.
The Lions have now won five-consecutive games for the third time this season and have been victorious in 18 of their last 23 games.
Southeastern returns to action Tuesday at Jackson State. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
