Box Score HAMMOND, La. – Pinch hitter
Webb Bobo's sacrifice fly to center field plated pinch runner
Kennon Menard in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field for a 2-1 Southeastern Louisiana walkoff win over Sacred Heart.
A tight game, just like the series opener, Sacred Heart (3-4) made a 1-0 lead stand up for six innings before the Lions (9-5) could tie the game.
Dylan Hills (1-1) worked three innings of shutout relief to earn the win, finishing the game for starter
Kyle Keller. Pioneer reliever Nick Morrissey (0-1) suffered the loss on an unearned run.
Sacred Heart scored its run in the top of the first. Jayson Sullivan drew a one-out walk from Keller, moved to second on Zack Short's single to left and took third on a wild pitch. Following a two-out walk to Dan Perez, Pioneer first baseman Victor Sorrento singled to left. Sullivan scored easily, but the throw from Southeastern's
Kyle Cedotal beat Short to the plate for the final out of the inning.
Following the first, Keller retired the next nine batters he faced and went toe-to-toe with Sacred Heart starter Jeff Stoddard in the second pitcher's duel of the series.
The Lions tied the game off Stoddard in the sixth. Shortstop
Jacob Williams singled to right with one out and promptly stole second base.
Jameson Fisher picked up his 14th RBI of the season with a two-out single, past the second baseman, into right.
Right fielder
Andrew Godbold led off the ninth with an infield chopper. The throw to first was high and when Sorrento landed he collided with Godbold, dropping the ball. Pinch runner
Corey Bryan was caught attempting to steal second in a run down before
Brett Hoffman doubled into the right-center gap.
Southeastern coach
Matt Riser elected to send in freshman
Kennon Menard as a pinch runner for Hoffman and send up
Daniel Midyett as a pinch hitter. Before Midyett walked, Menard was award third base on a balk, forcing the Pioneers to intentionally put Midyett and Cedotal on to set up a force at every base.
The stage was then set for Bobo to lift a 2-2 pitch into center for the game-winning RBI.
Keller worked six innings, allowing one earned run on on four hits. He walked four and struck out three. Stoddard allowed one earned run in 6.1 innings of work, surrendering four hits and a pair of walks. He hit one batter and struck out four. Neither starter factored in the decision.
Coupled with Saturday's 6-2 win, the Lions took the series, two games to one, and have now won three of four weekend series heading into Southland Conference play this coming weekend against Lamar.
Southeastern continues its current homestand with a pair of midweek games against No. 15-ranked Ole Miss at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. First pitch for Tuesday's contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., while Wednesday's game is slated for 4 p.m.
