Scioneaux Dominant As Lions Cruise Past Sacred Heart, 6-2

Sophomore retires 20-consecutive batters

Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Sophomore right-hander Tate Scioneaux dominated Sacred Heart hitters Saturday as Southeastern Louisiana cruised to a 6-2 win over the Pioneers at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Scioneaux (3-0) retired 20-consecutive batters following a single in the second inning by Sacred Heart's Keaton Flint. The Reserve, La., native allowed two runs on just four hits in 8.1 innings of work. He struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The Lions (8-5) handed Scioneaux a 2-0 lead in the second. With two outs, Kyle Cedotal and Kevin Carr produced back-to-back doubles. Carr later moved to third bases on an infield single by Jacob Seward and then scored on a throwing error by the Pioneer second baseman.

Southeastern sent nine men to the plate, scoring four runs, in the sixth. Brooks Morse led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Andrew Godbold's one-out single to right. Brett Hoffman chopped a controversial infield single to the first baseman, plating Morse. In the ensuing discussion following the play, Sacred Heart starting pitcher Nick Leiningen (0-1) was ejected.

Gabe Woods greeted reliever Jesus Medina with a double down the left-field line, driving in both Godbold and Hoffman. Kyle Cedotal followed with a bunt single up the third-base line, putting runners on the corners. Woods would come home to score when Carr hit a hot smash the first baseman failed to field cleanly.

Carr, Cedotal and Woods all posted two-hit games for the Lions, who had every player in the starting lineup reach base at least once in the game.

Sunday's 1 p.m. series finale is Academy Family Sunday in the Park. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open down the left-field line featuring a bounce house and other family-friendly activities (weather pending). Kid's are welcome to join the Lions on the field for the national anthem Sunday and to run the bases after the game.

Fans will also have a chance Sunday to enjoy the Raising Cane's Challenge. If the Lions score five or more runs in the game, fans presenting their ticket stub (or student coupon), and purchasing a combo at a participating Raising Cane's, will receive a free combo of equal or lesser value (through the following day).

Junior right-hander Kyle Keller (1-0, 1.59) draws the starting nod for Southeastern opposite Pioneer southpaw Jeff Stoddard (0-0, 4.15).

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps.
