Riser Faces Alma Mater As Lions Open Season Series Against Tulane

Southeastern begins four-game road swing

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana baseball coach Matt Riser brings the Lions into Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for the first time as head coach Tuesday, facing Tulane at 6:30 p.m.

A member of the Green Wave's 2005 College World Series squad, Riser is in his first season in charge of the Southeastern (11-8) program after spending the past six season as a Lion assistant coach. It is the first of three scheduled games between the two schools this season.

The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM, online and either the KSLU or TuneIn Radio smartphone apps. The Lions are coming off a series victory over Lamar on the opening weekend of Southland Conference play. Southeastern dropped the series opener, 5-3 in 10 innings, but came back to sweep a doubleheader from the Cardinals, 4-2 and 7-6.

Jameson Fisher (.426), Sam Roberson (.421), Andrew Godbold (.348) and Jacob Williams (.308) lead Southeastern at the plate. Brett Hoffman leads the team with eight doubles and 18 RBIs, while Fisher has driven in 16 and Godbold has one home run to go with 13 RBIs.

The Lions are hitting .278 as team and have been successful on 37-of-53 stolen base attempts, among the most in the nation. Southeastern's pitching staff has compiled a 2.89 ERA, fanning 143 batters in 171 innings pitched.

Senior right-hander Sean Kennel (1-2, 3.10) earns the start for the Lions, drawing freshman righty Cory Merrill (0-0, 4.76) for the Green Wave. 

Richard Carthon (.344), Andrew Garner (.311), Garrett Deschamp (.308) and Hunter Hope (.306) lead Tulane at the plate. Deschamp and Hope lead the team with six doubles each, while Deschamp owns a team-best 22 RBIs. Garner has hit a team-high three home runs.

The Green Wave (10-8) are hitting .253 as a team, with six home runs, and have been successful on 10-of-13 stolen base attempts. Tulane's pitching staff has compiled a 3.57 ERA, fanning 138 batters in 156.1 innings pitched.

Tulane dropped a Conference USA series at East Carolina this past weekend, winning the opener before falling in the final two games.

Following the game Southeastern will travel to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three-game, Southland Conference series, March 21-23.
