Southeastern Places 95 on Southland Commissioner's Spring Honor Roll

Lions, Lady Lions finish second among league institutions

HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana University placed second among Southland Conference institutions with 95 representatives on the Southland Conference Commissioner's Spring 2013 Honor Roll, which the league office announced on Tuesday.

Only McNeese State's 108 representatives topped Southeastern's contingent among Southland schools. The Southeastern baseball, men's track and field and men's golf programs led the league for their respective sports, while men's basketball finished second in the Southland. Included among Southeastern's honorees were 12 student-athletes with a 4.0 grade point average.

The Southland Conference Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll acknowledges participants in all sports sponsored by the league and its member institutions. The honor roll is released within 30 days at the conclusion of the fall and spring semesters, recognizing student-athletes who maintained a minimum 3.00 GPA in the semester of their sports' championship. Student-athletes, nominated by their respective academic advisors, must have been eligible to compete in a conference sport during the academic year in which the nomination occurs. The spring honor roll includes student-athletes from the sports of baseball, basketball, golf, softball, tennis and track.

The Lion baseball program placed 22 student-athletes on the honor roll. Highlighting the baseball honorees were F.L. McDonald Post Graduate Scholarship recipient Buck Bernard, as well as Southland All-Academic choices Jordan Hymel, Harry Slade and Sean Kennel.

The men's track and field program also put 22 student-athletes on the list. Southland All-Academic selection Vance Law, along with 4.0 student-athletes Samuel Abboud, Kevin Dorhauer, Joseph Edwards and Tony Miller were among the Lion selections.

The women's track and field team was also well-represented, finishing fifth in the league with 18 selections. That group included Southland All-Academic selections Brittany Pfantz and Kierra Crews.

The Southeastern softball team was one of seven Southland softball programs to put double-digit student-athletes on the honor roll. Among the 12 selections from Pete Langlois' squad were All-Southland performers Michelle Duhe, Katie Lacour and Kelsey Nichols, Jim McKay Scholarship recipient Kati Morse and Academic All-Southland pick Megan McCollum.

The women's basketball program was one behind the league leaders with seven selections. All-Southland forward Aja Gibson and Academic All-Southland guard Symone Miller were among the Lady Lion representatives.

The Southland Conference champion Southeastern men's golf team was also well-represented, putting six student-athletes on the honor roll. All-Southland performers Rhys West, Eamon Bradley, Grady Brame, Nicholas Inderthal and Baptiste Courtachon were all on the list.

Southeastern's other league championship team from the 2012-13 year was the women's tennis team, who had four representatives on the list. Much like the golf team, the Lions' entire All-Southland contingent – Isabel Brito, Valya Rusakova and Renee Villarreal – were placed on the honor roll.

The men's basketball team also placed four student-athletes on the honor roll. Southeastern All-Academic forward Onochie Ochie highlighted the Lions' representatives. The 95 student-athletes for the program were the most in the past four years for the program.
