One of the greatest highlights in Southeastern Louisiana University baseball history will be relived on the Southeastern Channel beginning tonight (May 30) when the campus station airs the Lions' historic 8-0 victory over Hawaii in the 1992 NCAA Regionals.

The game, Southeastern's first Division I NCAA Regional appearance, will air at 7:30 p.m. on Charter Cable Channel 18 in Tangipahoa, St. Tammany and Livingston parishes and on Charter 17 in Washington Parish. The regional victory will also re-air on the Southeastern Channel on Friday (1:30 p.m.), Saturday (8 a.m.), Sunday (1 p.m.), Tuesday (2:30 p.m.) and Wednesday (Midnight).

The game can also be viewed on the channel's 24/7 live webcast at www.southeastern.edu/tv and as video on demand as part of the channel's Classic Lions series.

“At this time of the NCAA regionals we're extremely excited to rebroadcast what might be the greatest moment in Southeastern baseball history on the Southeastern Channel,” said channel general manager Rick Settoon. “This truly fits the mold of our Classic Lions television series for Southeastern sports.  A lot of the local players and coaches from that 1992 team along with Lion fans will want to relive this special moment.”

Southeastern, under legendary coach Greg Marten, used the shutout pitching of ace right-hander Kirk Bullinger to blank the second-seeded Rainbows at Sancet Field in Tuscon, Ariz. The Lions qualified for their first Division I NCAA postseason apperance by winning the Trans America Athletic Conference tournament championship. Hawaii, which went 45-12 during the regular-season, entered the postseason as Western Athletic Conference champion.

Bullinger, who would have a long professional baseball career that included five seasons in the Major Leagues, hurled two complete-game victories in a 36-hour stretch to give the Lions the TAAC title and the NCAA tourney bid. He fired a one-hit shutout against Florida International and one day later returned to stop Centenary for the tourney title.

The Metairie native outdueled UH ace southpaw Scott Karl, who entered the game with a 13-2 record. Karl would later pitch six seasons in the Major Leagues.

After defeating Hawaii in the opener, the fifth-seeded Lions dropped an 8-5 contest to eventual national champion Pepperdine before being eliminated in a rematch against Hawaii.

Starters for the Lions against Hawaii were right fielder Troy Melancon, center fielder Ray Ferrand, third baseman Greg Elliott, first baseman Chris Finley, left fielder Scott Tribble, designated hitter Chad Anderson, shortstop Kiley Hughes, second baseman Johnny Castanon and catcher Dru Nettles.

Joining Marten on the coaching staff were a pair of former Lion letterwinners - Johnny Brechtel and Mark Gosnell.
