HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team took advantage of a pair of crucial Texas A&M-Corpus Christi miscues Friday night en route to a series-opening, 5-2 Southland Conference win at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.

Southeastern (27-16, 10-6 Southland), which had lost its last three series openers, jumped on Islander starter Trevor Foss (5-6) early.

Kyle Cedotal drew a walk to open the bottom of the first and moved up when Ben Hernandez reach on catcher's interference. A grounder to first by Jameson Fisher moved both into scoring position and Sam Roberson drove them both in with a chopper over the third baseman.

After working out of a jam in the second, Foss settled in and matched the pace of Lion starter Andro Cutura (1-2).

A&M-Corpus Christi (23-18, 9-7 Southland) scratched across single runs in the fourth and sixth to tie the game. Consecutive singles by Brad Porras, Cody Stephens and Stafford Brantley plated the Islanders' first run. Porras tied the game in the sixth with his second of three hits on the night.

The 2-2 score did not last long as Southeastern regained the lead in its next at bat.

Fisher led off the sixth with a single up the middle and went to third as Roberson followed with a single into the left-center-field gap. With two outs, third baseman Jesse Buratt reached on an infield single allowing Fisher to score.

Up 3-2,  Cutura worked into the eighth. He allowed a pair of runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out four, in 7.2 innings pitched for the win.

Southeastern tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the eighth. Fisher reached on a single and moved up to second when Stephens, the Islander second baseman, bobbled the ball on Roberson's fielder's choice. After Harry Slade sacrificed both into scoring position, Buratt came through again with a single to right to drive in both runners.

Mason Klotz worked 1.1 perfect innings in relief to close out the game and earn his fifth save of the season. Foss suffered the loss.

With rain forecast for the Hammond area the rest of the weekend, Southeastern and the Islanders agreed to play a doubleheader Saturday to wrap up the series.

The finale is now slated to begin 45 minutes after the completion of Saturday's originally-scheduled 2 p.m. contest. Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field will be cleared between games and fans will need separate tickets for admission. Sunday's tickets will be honored for the series finale.

Take A Kid To The Game Day will still be in effect with all children age 12 and under admitted free to the finale with a paying adult. Roomie's Kid Zone, sponsored by Academy Sports and Outdoors, will be open weather permitting.
