BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team defeated Brigham Young, 3-2, Saturday to sweep consecutive contests from the Cougars.

Freshman right-hander Tate Scioneaux (2-0) shut down the BYU bats as he earned his second win in as many starts. The Lions improved to 5-1 this season, with a suspended game against No. 2-ranked LSU remaining to be completed Sunday.

Southeastern scored early, taking a 1-0 lead after a half inning. Corey Bryan reached on an infield single to open the game, and catching BYU napping, grabbed an extra base. Jesse Buratt sacrificed him to third and Harry Slade drove Bryan in with a single to left field.

BYU (2-5) tied the game in the bottom of the second. First baseman Brock Whitney drew a one-out walk and moved to third on Kelton Caldwell's single to right. Catcher Jarrett Jarvis plated Whitney with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Lions jumped right back in the lead the next inning. Ladd Rhodes doubled to right with one out and scored ahead of the throw on Buratt's two-out single to right. Slade drew a walk and Aaron Haag singled home Buratt.

With a 3-1 lead in the third Scioneaux settled in, retiring 15 of the final 17 batters he faced. In 7.2 innings pitched, he allowed a single run (earned) on four hits and a pair of walks. The Reserve, La., native fanned a career-high seven batters.

Matt Pittari retired the final batter of the eighth and John Gremillion battled through a rocky ninth inning to record his second save of the season. BYU starter Jeff Barker (1-1) suffered the loss.

The Lions will resume play with LSU Sunday at 1 p.m. Mason Katz is at the plate for the Tigers with runners on the corners and two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Jordan Hymel (Southeastern) and Ryan Eades (LSU) are each expected to return to the mound when play resumes in the scoreless game.

Tickets from Friday's originally scheduled game will be honored Sunday for the resumption of play. Any remaining tickets to the Southeastern-LSU game can only be purchased through the LSU Athletic Ticket Office at (225) 578-2184 or online at www.LSUtix.net.
