FRISCO, Texas – Four Southeastern Louisiana athletes were named to the All-Time Men's and Women's Indoor Track & Field Honor Rolls announced Thursday by the Southland Conference as part of its year-long 50th Anniversary commemoration.
Christine Amertil, a four-time Olympian for her native Bahamas, was the 2000 and 2001 Southland Indoor 400-Meters Champion as well as the 2000 Southland Indoor 200-Meters Champion. She set the conference's Indoor All-Time Record in 400-Meters (53.76 in 2001) as well as the Southland's Indoor Meet Record in 400-Meters (54.06 in 2001).
The most recent competitor for the Lions, Shannon Grover owns the Southland's Indoor Meet Record in the Men's 200-Meters (21.50 in 2012).
Henry Rop, a standout distance runner for the Lions, earned 2008 the Southland Conference's Indoor Newcomer of the Year award following a season in which he claimed the Indoor 5000-Meters title at the conference meet.
All-American throws athlete Adonson Shallow earned mutliple conference awards and event titles. He was the 2009 and 2010 Southland Indoor Weight Throw Champion as well as the 2010 Indoor Shot Put Champion, earning Indoor Meet Outstanding Field Performer honors both years as well as being named the Southland's 2009 Indoor Newcomer of the Year. He holds the Southland's Indoor All-Time and Meet Records in the Weight Throw (68-11.75 in 2010). In 2011, he earned All-America honors in the Weight Throw.
"The Southland Conference has always prided itself on its successful track and field history, and we're pleased to recognize such an illustrious honor roll of great student-athletes and coaches," league commissioner Tom Burnett said.
The men's honor roll includes 101 elite student-athletes in the sport going back to 1970, even though the Southland held its first indoor championship meet in 1980. The Southland began sponsoring an indoor championship for women in 1987, and that honoree list includes 74 all-time standouts. Additionally, six men's and three women's coaches were recognized for their historic contributions to these sports.
The Conference selected those performers that had multiple accomplishments during their careers, including numerous conference championships won, records set, NCAA and national championships, and participation in international competition.
Southland student-athletes have accounted for 11 NCAA Division I national championships. These include Arkansas State's Thomas Hill (60-yd. Hurdles, 1970), Arkansas State's Earl Bell (Pole Vault, 1975 & 1976), Texas-Arlington's Gilbert Smith (Long Jump, 1982), Louisiana-Monroe's Andre Ester (Long Jump, 1987 & 1988), ULM's Christoph Koch (35-lb. Weight Throw, 1989), Northwestern State's Brian Brown (High Jump, 1990), McNeese State's Michael Roberson (High Jump, 1996), McNeese State's Brad Gebauer (Pole Vault, 2007) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Shadrack Songok (5,000 Meters, 2008).
Texas-Arlington led the All-time Honor Roll with 20 men's selections, followed by Texas-San Antonio with 12, and Stephen F. Austin and Texas State with 11 each. On the women's side, Texas-Arlington and Texas State each had 16 selections, followed by Texas-San Antonio with eight and Stephen F. Austin with six.
