Lions Fall Victim To Big Inning

Tulane's six-run fifth difference in the game

Brock Hebert extended his hitting streak to 19 games
Box Score

HAMMOND – Tulane broke open a tie game with a six-run fifth inning Tuesday as Southeastern Louisiana fell to the Green Wave, 7-2.

“I'm disappointed,” head coach Jay Artigues said. “This is a game we should have won at home. We didn't play with much mental toughness.”

Nick Schneeberger gave Tulane (17-7) an early lead as he hit the first pitch of the second inning out of the ballpark to left-center field.

Southeastern answered with a single run in its half of the second to tie the game. Jonathan Pace extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a leadoff single. Cody Gougler followed with a single to left field.

Ladd Rhodes moved both runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Jacob Fisher then drove in Pace with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at one apiece.

The Green Wave blew the game open in the sixth. They chased Lions starter Joseph Koon (3-1) from the game, and greeted reliever Kaleb Manuel with a sac fly and a two-run home run. Six of the seven runs in the game were charged to Koon, who picked up his first loss of the season.

“I felt like we pitched up in the zone and Tulane's a good hitting team,” Artigues said. “They capitalized on it.”

Southeastern (18-7) added its second run in the sixth. Brock Hebert extended his hitting streak to 19 games with a one-out single to left. Hebert stole second, his 22nd of the season, and moved to third on a throwing error by Tulane catcher Blake Crohan. Pace then delivered a single to drive in Hebert.

Freshman right-hander Kyle Keller, a Jesuit graduate, worked 1.2 scoreless innings to close out the game on the mound for Southeastern after stranding a pair of inherited runners in the eighth.

“Kyle doesn't have a lot of innings this year because the guys in front of him have been throwing so well, but I really liked the way he pitched tonight,” Artigues said.

The Lions wrap up a five–game homestand Wednesday against Alcorn State (6-18).

This will be the Braves' second trip to Hammond this season. On March 7, the Lions pounded out a 12-1 win over Alcorn State.

“After a great atmosphere here tonight, we didn't play the way we wanted,” Artigues said. “With Alcorn coming in it's important we play well.”

Southeastern will start Buck Bernard (1-0, 2.84) on the mound against the Braves. Alcorn State lost Tuesday at Mississippi State, 6-2.

First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and the game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9). Live statistics will be available at www.LionSports.net.
