LAKE CHARLES, LA – Southeastern Louisiana split a pair of games in Lake Charles, La., Friday dropping a 7-6 decision to Central Michigan and topping McNeese State 9-1 in a non-conference matchup.
The Lions (8-2) and Cowboys (2-7) each scored a run in the first inning of the nightcap, but
Jordan Hymel shutdown the McNeese State bats over the next six innings allowing Southeastern's bats to go to work.
Hymel (2-0) allowed four hits in seven innings pitched to pick pick up the win and freshman
Andro Cutura tossed a pair of scoreless innings to close out the game.
Southeastern a run in the third as
Harry Slade and
Michael Rutland each singled to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt by
Brock Hebert moved them both into scoring position and
Jonathan Pace followed with a grounder to plate Slade for the lead.
The Lions added two runs in the fourth after
Brett Hoffman and
Ladd Rhodes each singled to open the inning. A sacrifice bunt by freshman
Sam Roberson moved both runners into scoring position and
Ben Hernandez plated both with a double to center field.
In the sixth, Hernandez and Slade led off the inning with back-to-back singles and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Rutland.
Brock Hebert plated both with a double to left-center field and then stole third base. Pace singled to right field to score Hebert.
Southeastern added single runs in the eighth and ninth to finish off the scoring in the second game.
In the first game Southeastern fell behind early, but scratched back in the middle innings to take the lead. The Lions bullpen couldn't hold the lead for starter
Joseph Koon and Central Michigan (3-5) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take back the lead for good.
The Cippewas scored a run in the bottom of the first on a pair of singles sandwiched around a balk and a passed ball. Central Michigan added two more runs in the second on a two-run home run by shortstop Jordan Dean.
Southeastern answered with two runs in the third as Slade and Rutland opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Slade scored on Pace's one out single to right and Rutland scored on
Cody Gougler's sacrifice fly to center.
The Lions took the lead in the fourth with a pair of runs.
Britt Gautreaux drew a one-out walk and was erased on a fielder's choice by Hernandez. Slade followed with a double to score Hernandez and Rutland plated Slade with a single to right field.
A suicide squeeze by the Lions plated an additional run in the sixth to extend the lead.
Central Michigan's bats woke up in the seventh as they scored four runs off relievers
Jason Greenleaf and
Dylan Hills to take a 7-5 lead.
Southeastern added a run in the ninth and was threatening to tie the game until Rhodes, pinch running for Gougler, was thrown out trying to steal second.
The Lions face Central Michigan again Saturday at 2 p.m. in Lake Charles, La.
