LORMAN, Miss.  – Southeastern Louisiana junior forward Aja Gibson scored six of her team-high 17 points in the final two minutes, as the Lady Lions rallied past Alcorn State, 59-54, in non-conference action Friday afternoon at the David L. Whitney HPER Complex.

Southeastern (7-3) trailed by as many as 15 points in the opening half, before holding Alcorn State (0-8) to 15.6 percent shooting (5-for-32) from the floor in the second half. The win was the Lady Lions' fourth in their last five games and sent Southeastern into the Christmas break on a high note.

Gibson was joined in double figures by senior guard Elizabeth Styles, who finished with 11 points. Senior forward Brandi Simmons narrowly missed her seventh double-double of the year, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds.

Styles also paced the Lady Lions with four assists. Simmons and junior guard Jameika Hoskins led the way defensively with two steals apiece for Southeastern.

ASU junior guard Tierra Frost led all scorers with 19 points and was joined in double figures by teammates Carolinsia Crumbly and Renelle Richmond with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Crumbly also led the Lady Braves with eight rebounds and seven steals, while senior guard Isis Smith dished out a game-high seven assists.

Alcorn opened the game on an 8-1 run and controlled the game's first 15 minutes. A three-point play by Frost stretched the ASU edge to 30-15 with 6:43 remaining.

Southeastern was able to chip into the lead in the final six minutes of the half. Back-to-back baskets by Styles and senior guard Cierra Morris allowed the Lady Lions to cut the deficit to a more manageable 36-29 heading into the break.

Southeastern ratcheted up the defensive pressure in the second half to methodically cut into the lead. A pair of free throws by Styles pushed the Lady Lions ahead for the first time, 50-49, with 4:58 left.

Alcorn State answered with a Richmond free throw and a Crumbly jumper to take a 52-50 lead and would maintain that advantage until Smith sent Simmons to the line with 2:07 left.

After Simmons made the first to cut the lead to one, Gibson grabbed the rebound on a miss and put it back in to put Southeastern up, 53-52. Gibson would help the Lady Lions increase the lead, scoring on the next two trips to put the Lady Lions ahead, 57-52, with 35 seconds left.

Alcorn State pulled within three on a pair of free throws by Frost with 19 seconds left. However, Styles and Simmons iced the game from the line to secure the comeback victory.

Southeastern will take a break to celebrate Christmas before facing defending national champion Baylor on Dec. 29 at 7 p.m.
