Bockhaus, Shaw Claim Southland Weekly Honors

Lady Lion duo keyed 2-0 win at Oral Roberts

HAMMOND – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana soccer team to its third consecutive shutout victory in Southland Conference play, senior Lacey Bockhaus and junior Shanyce Shaw earned Southland Player of the Week honors in an announcement from the league office on Tuesday.

Bockhaus and Shaw both played a key role in the Lady Lions' 2-0 victory at Oral Roberts. Bockhaus, a native of San Leandro, Calif., was named the league's goalkeeper of the week for the second straight week and the seventh time in her career. Shaw, who hails from Ajax, Ont., was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Shaw's honor marks the second week in a row where Southeastern has produced the league's top defender, as freshman Cheyenne Maxwell took home the accolade last Tuesday.

“We're very happy for both Lacey and Shanyce,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “They are both very deserving of recognition. Lacey made some key saves to allow us to earn a tough win against a very good Oral Roberts team. Shanyce has been steady in the back for us all season and has consistently prevented the other team's attackers from getting past her.”

Bockhaus, a three-time All-Southland Conference performer, is closing out her final season with the Lady Lions in style. After allowing seven goals in the first two league matches, she has allowed just one score in the past five matches – a stretch that includes four shutouts. Bockhaus had seven saves on Sunday on the way to her eighth shutout of the season. She is currently the Southland Conference career record holder with 38 shutouts and is third in school history with 303 saves.

Shaw is one of three players on the Southeastern team, along with sophomore Chelsea Villaescusa and junior Kelsey Salcido, to start every match this season. The solid play of Shaw, Maxwell, Villaescusa and junior Nelly Traore in the back has helped Southeastern clinch its seventh straight season of double-digit wins.

Southeastern will look to close out the regular season on a high note, when it hosts Northwestern State on Friday at 3 p.m. at the Southeastern Soccer Complex. Prior to the match, the Lady Lions will honor Bockhaus, Maiya Cooper, Karly Dagys, Lauren Stillians, Kerry McWhirter, Megan Miller, Sam McNally, Cassie Northrup, Kailey Mills, Tabitha McReynolds and Dana Songe in a Senior Day ceremony.
