Lady Lions Drop Southland Contest

Despite a season-high 11 blocks by the Lady Lions, Texas-Arlington took a four-set victory Thursday over the Southeastern volleyball team in a Southland Conference match.

Tara Frantz tallied 18 kills for the Mavericks en route to a 25-18, 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, UTA win.

The Lady Lions (5-25, 1-12 Southland) were led by senior Paige Dollison's 11 kills. Dollison recorded a pair of service aces, one solo block and three block assists against the Mavericks.

Megan McMillin finished with 18 digs and Taylor Buckner contributed a season-high 16 digs. Cherish Krohn chipped in an additional 11 digs for the Lady Lions.

Southeastern took an early 8-6 lead in the first set on one of Dollison's kills. The Mavericks took over with a Frantz kill to make the score 12-11 and never looked back.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 9-3 second set lead, but UTA went on a 6-0 run to tie the score. Southeastern pulled away again, 13-10, but the Mavericks came roaring back for a 16-14 lead. There were three lead changes during the set with UTA ultimately ending up on top.

Southeastern took the third set on the strength of six blocks, including solo blocks by Tamra Grayson and Kinsey Williams. The Lady Lions built a 10-2 lead before UTA once again came roaring back to tie and then take the lead, 11-10. There were six lead changes in the set, but this time Southeastern came out on top.

UTA took a commanding 14-6 lead in the fourth set and the Lady Lions never managed to claw back within reach.

The Mavericks (11-16, 7-6 Southland) were lead by Frantz and Amanda Aguilera (11 kills). Aguilera also produced 14 digs to finish the evening with a double-double. Two other players – Alicia Shaffer and Eld-hah Kaswatuka – also recorded double-digit digs for UTA.

Shaffer, who finished with 24 digs, fell three short of setting the Mavericks' career record.

Southeastern hosts Texas State at noon Saturday in the final home match of the 2011 season. The annual Senior Day ceremony will take place prior to the first serve.
