HAMMOND – Jennifer Brandt recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs as Nicholls State received solid blocking at the net and held off Southeastern Louisiana, 23-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-23, in a Southland Conference volleyball match Tuesday at the University Center.
Rachel Yezak and Jessica Addicks had 11 kills each for Nicholls State (15-6, 2-3 Southland), which hit .257 for the match and recorded 14 team blocks. Jordan Karst added 44 assists and a team-high 16 digs for the Colonels while Addicks collected eight blocks.
Southeastern (4-18, 0-5 Southland) placed four players in double figures in kills, led by
Paige Dollison with a career-high 15.
Elizabeth Ramee added a season-high 14 kills for the Lady Lions while
Courtney Donald added 13 and
Tamra Grayson a season-high 10.
The Lady Lions took control in the opening set on a kill by freshman
Zoe Douglas that gave Southeastern a 23-22 lead. Nicholls cut the lead to 24-23 on a Southeastern service error, but an attack error by Kathryn Stock gave the Lady Lions the opening set.
Southeastern trailed 22-21 in the second set before kills by Dollison and Donald gave the Lady Lions a 23-22 lead. Out of the timeout, Nicholls State charged back behind a kill and service ace by Nancy Taylor and the Colonels would eventually knot the match at a set apiece when Brandt and Sarah Terry combined on a block.
Nicholls took control early in the third set as it built a 10-5 lead after a bad pass by Southeastern. The Lady Lions chipped away at the lead as Ramee recorded back-to-back kills and
Lindsey Young followed with a kill that cut the lead to 10-9.
Terry snapped a 14-14 tie with a kill before consecutive kills by Addicks gave the Colonels a 17-14 lead, forcing Southeastern to call timeout. The Lady Lions got as close as 19-15 on a kill by Donald, but Nicholls State closed out the set with a 6-2 run that included three kills by Brandt.
Nicholls opened a 6-2 lead in the final set before Southeastern cut into the lead. The Lady Lions trailed 15-11 before going on a 9-2 run that was capped by a kill by Grayson for a 20-17 advantage.
The Colonels charged back and snapped a 23-23 deadlock as Terry recorded consecutive solo blocks to end the match.
Young set a season-high with 51 assists for Southeastern, which hit .222 and finished with a 67-52 advantage in kills.
Chelsea Barr posted a season-high 20 digs for the Lady Lions while
Arianne Cruckshank had a season-high 15.
Southeastern will close out its four-match homestand on Saturday when it entertains Southland Conference rival Stephen F. Austin in a 2 p.m. match.
