Lady Lions Drop Match At UTSA

Face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – Whitney Walls and Dempsey Thornton recorded double-digit kills for Texas-San Antonio as the Roadrunners swept a three-set match against Southeastern. Powered by a .393 team hitting percentage, UTSA won 25-12, 25-19, 25-17, in a Southland Conference match Thursday at the Convocation Center.

Walls had 11 kills (.714 hitting percentage) while Thornton picked up 10 for the Roadrunners. Kelsey Swirtlich had 33 assists and Kelsey Jewasko had 15 digs for UTSA (13-8, 7-0 Southland), which stayed undefeated in conference play.

Tamara Grayson led Southeastern (4-20, 0-7 Southland) with five kills. Lindsey Young's 16 assists and six digs were match highs for the Lady Lions.

The closest Southeastern came to leading the first match was 5-4; UTSA outscored the Lady Lions 20-8 the rest of the way. The Roadrunners led from first serve until the end of the first set. UTSA hit a match-best .552 as a team in the first set.

UTSA took the initial lead in the second match before the Lady Lions rallied to tie the score ,10-10, after a Scwirtlich service error. Southeastern took its first lead of the match on the next serve, as Grayson recorded one of her team-leading five kills. Southeastern would have a one-point advantage twice more before UTSA tied the set, 14-14. The Roadrunners regained the lead for good, 16-15, on an Arianne Cruckshank service error.

In the third set, Southeastern took a 2-1 lead before falling behind and rallying to tie the score, 10-10, off a block by Young and Paige Dollison. UTSA would take the lead back for good, 11-10.

Southeastern will continue its four-match roadtrip Saturday, when it travels to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a 1 p.m. Southland Conference match.
