Southeastern Closes Non-Conference Schedule With 85-57 Loss at Tulane

Lady Lions unable to overcome sluggish first half

Tulane senior forward Brittany Lindsey scored a game-high 23 points and Southeastern Louisiana was unable to bounce back from a porous first half, falling 85-57 in the non-conference women's basketball finale for both teams Monday night in Fogelman Arena.

Southeastern (8-4) had its three-game winning streak snapped, as Tulane (11-2) had six players score in double figures to extend its win streak to four games.

Junior guard Kelli Jenkins and senior forward Rashima Jenkins led Southeastern with 13 points apiece. Kelli Jenkins had a team-high four assists for the Lady Lions, moving her past former Lady Lion Amy Weir for eighth place on the school's career list with 261 assists.

Junior guard Latoria Holder, freshman forward Aja Gibson and freshman center Kaitlyn Waller had six points apiece for Southeastern. Holder also pulled down a career-high nine rebounds to lead the Lady Lions, while Rashima Jenkins grabbed seven rebounds and hit her first career three-point field goal.

Lindsey narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go with her game-high scoring output. Senior guard Roshaunda Barnes posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 assists. Lindsey and Barnes were joined in double figures by senior wing Tiffany Aidoo (13 points), junior center Brett Benzio (13 points), senior wing Danielle Nunn (11 points) and sophomore guard Olivia Grayson (10 points).

Tulane shot 53.3 percent (32-for-60) from the floor, while holding Southeastern to 34.5 percent (20-for-58) shooting. Benzio keyed the Tulane defensive effort with seven blocked shots.

Tulane opened the game with a 25-4 run and never looked back. Southeastern cut the lead to 31-14 on a Kelli Jenkins layup with 4:55 left in the opening period. However, Tulane closed the half with a 14-2 run to take a commanding 45-16 lead.

Tulane shot 56.3 percent (18-for-32) from the floor in the opening half. Aidoo led the Green Wave with 12 points, while Grayson and Lindsey added 10 points apiece.

Conversely, the Lady Lions were held to 20.7 percent (6-for-29) shooting in the first half. Benzio blocked six shots in the first half for Tulane. Gibson had six points to lead Southeastern in the opening period.

Southeastern will open Southland Conference play on Saturday, facing Stephen F. Austin at 6 p.m. in Nacogdoches, Texas. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
