Southeastern Welcomes Sugar Bears for Midweek Southland Contest

Lady Lions look to get back on track

Junior guard Gabrielle George is Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will return to action on Wednesday, hosting Southland Conference East Division foe Central Arkansas at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

The game between the Lady Lions (9-7, 1-3 Southland) and the visiting Sugar Bears (11-7, 3-2 Southland) will be televised on a tape-delay basis by the Southeastern Channel (Charter Channel 18) starting on Thursday night. The channel will also offer a live video stream that will be available at www.LionSports.net, where a live audio stream is also on tap.

Southeastern junior Gabrielle George is Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game. The first 100 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Cedar Hill, Texas native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE. George has been a key reserve for the Lady Lions and is currently third on the team with just under two assists per game.

The Lady Lions will be looking to bounce back from its first home loss – a 62-50 defeat by league foe Nicholls. In the loss, Nicholls forced 26 Lady Lion turnovers to counter a 46-29 Southeastern rebounding edge.

Junior guard Kelli Jenkins led Southeastern with 11 points and moved into a tie for seventh place on the school's career assists list. Senior forward Rashima Jenkins added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Lady Lions.

On Saturday, senior guard Chelsea Hix moved into a tie for second place on the school's career list with 139 three-point field goals. Senior forward Rachel Mackie paced Southeastern's dominant effort on the boards, pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.

On the year, Southeastern is averaging 62.8 points per game. Kelli Jenkins leads the team with 9.8 points per game, followed closely by Rashima Jenkins (9.4 ppg) and freshman forward Aja Gibson (9.2 ppg) and all three rank among the top 30 scorers in the Southland. Hix (6.9 ppg), junior guard Latoria Holder (6.5 ppg) and Mackie (6.0 ppg).

Southeastern is second in the league with a 40.3 field goal percentage. Gibson (49.2, 3rd) and Rashima Jenkins (48.3, 6th) are among the league's most accurate shooters. However, the Lady Lions accuracy has been offset by 21.7 turnovers per contest and the Lady Lions sit in 10th with a minus-3.2 turnover margin.

Kelli Jenkins is tops on the team and sixth in the Southland Conference with 3.7 assists per contest. Hix is the team's top outside shooter, ranking 15th in the Southland with 1.6 three-point field goals per outing and 14th with a 32.9 three-point field goal percentage.

The Lady Lions continue to lead the Southland with a plus-5.5 rebounding margin. Rashima Jenkins leads the team with 7.3 rebounds per game – good for ninth in the Southland. Mackie is right behind Jenkins, sitting in 12th in the Southland with 6.9 boards per contest and is averaging a monster 11.0 rebounds per game in league play.

Defensively, Southeastern is holding opponents to 65.9 points per game and forcing 18.4 turnovers per game. Holder (1.8 spg, 11th) and senior guard Mary Fountain (1.6 spg, 14th) are among the league's steal leaders. Holder also is 14th in the Southland with 11 blocked shots.

Much like Southeastern, Central Arkansas is coming off a tough home loss on Saturday. The Sugar Bears fell 60-56 to defending Southland Conference champion Lamar in Conway, Ark.

In the loss, sophomore forward Megan Herbert posted her league-best 12th double-double of the season, finishing with a game-high 21 points and 18 rebounds. Freshman center Courtney Duever pitched in with 14 points off the bench, but UCA could not overcome 21 turnovers and four Lady Cardinals in double figures.

UCA comes in with a league-best 73.4 points per game. Herbert is the leading scorer in the Southland, averaging 16.5 points per game. She is joined among the Southland leaders by UCA sophomore guard Micah Rice (9.1 ppg).

Behind Herbert's league-best 55.7 field goal percentage, UCA leads the Southland with a 40.9 team field goal percentage. Junior guard Destinee Rogers is seventh in the Southland with 3.6 assists per game, while Rice (1.8, 9th) and sophomore forward Westin Taylor (1.6, 13th) are among the league's best in terms of three-point field goals made per game.

The Sugar Bears are averaging 39.6 rebounds per game and out-rebounding opponents by an average of 2.8 rebounds per contest. Herbert leads the Southland with 11.4 rebounds per contest.

Defensively, UCA is second in the league in scoring defense, holding foes to 61.1 points per game. Duever sits in ninth place in the Southland with 1.8 steals per contest, while Taylor's 14 blocks are good for 12th in the league.

Southeastern is 5-4 all-time versus Central Arkansas, which joined the Southland Conference prior to the 2006-07 season. In last season's meeting in Hammond, the Lady Lions celebrated Senior Day with a 77-50 win over UCA behind 21 points from then-senior forward Zevy Ivory.

Southeastern will return to the road on Saturday, facing Northwestern State at 2 p.m. in Natchitoches. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
