Lions, Lady Lions Impress at LSU Purple Tiger Invitational

Shallow, Rheams, Ogashi lead Southeastern in indoor opener

BATON ROUGE – Southeastern Louisiana senior Adonson Shallow won the shot put to highlight a day that saw the Lions and Lady Lions combine for 13 top-five finishes in the indoor season opening LSU Purple Tiger Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Carl Maddox Field House.

Shallow took the event with a throw of 57 feet, one inch (17.41 meters). The defending Southland indoor champion in the shot put and weight throw also finished second in the weight throw with a throw of 60-5.75 feet (19.41 meters).

Shallow was one of several Lions to shine in the season opener. In the mile run, Reese Lee (4:31.11) and Seth Cunningham (4:38.18) finished third and fourth, respectively. Abram Taylor finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdles, covering the distance in a time of 8.38.

The Lions also had several strong performances in the jumps. Michael Rheams posted a second place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 48-5.25 feet (14.76 m). Johnel Reams took fourth place in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 4.75 inches, while Phillippe Moore was fifth in the long jump with a 23-4.5 showing (7.12 m).

On the women's side, Michelle Ogashi and her 39-0.5 showing in the triple jump was good enough for third place. In the pole vault, Colleen Butler and Brittany Pfantz finished third and fourth with both clearing 11-3.75 feet.

In the shot put, Shalicia Rochon finished with a 42 foot, six inch throw to post a fourth-place finish. Rounding out Southeastern's top five finishes was Whitney Curry, who fifth in the mile with a time of 5:29.81.

Southeastern will be back in action when they compete in the Houston Invitational on Jan. 28-29.
