Lions Hold Final Scrimmage

Theodore, Newbill among standouts on both sides of the ball

Mark Newbill had an interception, tackle for loss and a pass breakup on Saturday
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana quarterbacks Tyler Beatty and B.J. Young each threw touchdown passes, while Tommy Connors and Mark Newbill each forced turnovers during the Lion football team's scrimmage Saturday morning at Strawberry Stadium.

The scrimmage was the team's final one of spring practice. Spring workouts conclude on Saturday, April 24 with the annual Spring Game at 2 p.m. at Strawberry Stadium.

Southeastern head coach Mike Lucas was pleased with areas on both side of the ball following Saturday's action.

“I'm really pleased with our progress in the running game,” Lucas commented. “We're getting good blocking up front and both Sam Fairley and Zeke Jones are having great springs and really running hard. Defensively, I felt the defensive line did some nice things and got good pressure on the quarterback.”

Early in the scrimmage, Beatty led Southeastern on a nice drive completing four passes for 45 yards – all to wideout Kory Theodore. Fairley set up Southeastern with first and goal, taking a pitch from Beatty and scampering down the right sideline for a 14-yard gain.

The Southeastern defense kept the offense out of the end zone, setting up fourth and goal from a yard and a half out. Fairley tried to bull his way in over the left side, but was met by a host of Lions including Connors, who stripped the ball loose.

The Lion offense answered a short while later. A nice play action fake by Beatty freed wide receiver Andre Cryer and Beatty connected with the wide open Kentwood native, who rolled in untouched from 49 yards out.

Young then led Southeastern on a nice drive, completing five consecutive passes on a 70-yard scoring march. A well-designed screen pass to Fairley netted 16 yards and set up a 23-yard scoring pass from Young to Cortney Sims. Young's pass was nicely placed in the right corner and Sims made an off balance catch for the score.

The scrimmage culminated with an overtime session, as the Lion offense was given one possession from the 25-yard line. A one-yard Jones run and a short pass from Beatty to Theodore set up third-and-long. Newbill stepped in front of Beatty's pass and raced 85 yards to end the scrimmage with a defensive touchdown.

Newbill also had a tackle for loss and a pass breakup for the Lions. Quinton Foster, Jordan Powell and Doc Ward each had a sack, while Michael Ducksworth and Avery Crooks had pass breakups. Tim Richardson also had a tackle for loss for Southeastern.

The Lions will return to the practice fields on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. to start its final week of spring drills.
