HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team wrapped up spring practice to kick off Super Lion Saturday in Strawberry Stadium.
Ninth-year SLU head coach
Frank Scelfo learned as much about his team off the field as on it during the 15 spring practices.
"What really stood out to us this spring was the accountability within our locker room," Scelfo said. "We're doing the right things – being where we're supposed to be and when we're supposed to be there. From that aspect, we've has as good of a spring as we've had since I've been here."
Southeastern will be replacing an impactful senior class from last season's squad, which finished 9-4 overall and advanced to the NCAA FCS playoffs for the fourth time in the past six seasons. Scelfo has been pleased how the leadership void has been filled, but declined to single out just one or two leaders.
"It's hard to just discuss one or two guys who have been great leaders," Scelfo said. "We just have so many guys on both sides of the ball, who have stepped in to those leadership roles that have been vacated. We had guys anxious to step up. Sometimes guys just need an opportunity and a voice."
On offense, Southeastern completed its first spring with two new coaches in the mix – offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Bergeron and offensive line coach and run game coordinator Ryan Allgood.
"It's really been a seamless transition with both Matt and Ryan," Scelfo stated. "Our offensive philosophy is going to be based on maximizing our strengths and will continue to evaluate that during the summer and fall camp."
With the new transfer portal rules eliminating the spring window, Southeastern was able to go through spring with more confidence that the players going though spring will be returning in the fall.
"Knowing the core of your team is in place helps," Scelfo said. "We're still a roster in progress. We'll add some more guys before fall and of course all our freshmen will be here as well. But from a development standpoint, it's huge to know what you've got for the most part."
Southeastern will open the 2026 season Aug. 27, hosting HCU in Strawberry Stadium. Fall camp opens in late July.
