Hornbuckle, Eight Lady Lions Earn All-Louisiana Honors

Southeastern places state-high four players on first team

Southeastern placed eight players on the 2010 All-Louisiana team
HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana head coach Blake Hornbuckle was named Louisiana Coach of the Year and a state-high four Lady Lions were named to the first team of the 2010 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana Collegiate Women's Soccer Team, which was announced on Sunday.

Representing the Southland Conference regular season champion Lady Lions on the first team were junior goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus, senior midfielder Natalie Santana, sophomore forward Maiya Cooper and sophomore forward Karly Dagys. Bockhaus, Santana and Cooper were each named to the first team for the second straight year, while Dagys earned her first nod to the first team, after earning honorable mention honors as a freshman in 2009.

Southeastern had a total of eight student-athletes earn All-Louisiana accolades. The entire Lady Lion defensive backfield – senior Nicole Brannigan, junior Kyle MacIntosh, senior Brittany Prieto and freshman Shanyce Shaw – were named to the team as an honorable mention selections. Both Brannigan and Brannigan earned their second All-Louisiana selection of their careers, while Prieto and Shaw made their first all-state appearance.

The job of assembling and cultivating the aforementioned talent fell to Hornbuckle, who was named the state's top coach for the second straight year and fifth time in his career. The 13th-year Lady Lion head coach led Southeastern to a school-record tying 15 victories and its fifth Southland Conference regular season title in school history. Hornbuckle, who was named the Southland Coach of the Year for the third time earlier this month, previously was named Louisiana Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2009.

“We're very excited for our student-athletes to receive this recognition among their peers in the state,” Hornbuckle commented. “We were very pleased to have such a large representation on the All-Louisiana team.”

Leading the Lady Lion contingent was Bockhaus, who was named the Southland Player of the Year after leading the Southland with a 0.64 goals against average, nine shutouts and a .873 save percentage. A first team All-Southland selection in each of the past two seasons, Bockhaus finished her junior season with a league career record 30 shutouts.

Bockhaus was not the only Southeastern student-athlete to etch her name into the Southland career record books in 2010. Santana, a two-time first team All-Southland selection, finished her career as the Southland's all-time leader with 26 career assists. In 2010, the Cypress, Calif. native scored eight goals and added six assists.

After finishing 2009 as the top freshman scoring tandem in the nation, Cooper and Dagys didn't miss a beat in their sophomore campaigns and both were named first team All-Southland last month. Cooper was the team's leading goal scorer for the second straight season, posting 11 goals. Dagys topped the Southland with nine assists and added six goals – including four game-winners in league play.

The members of the Southeastern defense all added to their accolades on Sunday. Last month, MacIntosh was named first team All-Southland, Brannigan and Prieto earned second team All-Southland honors and Shaw was named honorable mention All-Southland. The Southeastern quartet helped Southeastern hold opponents to a league-low 14 goals and a 0.64 goals against average.

LSU junior defender Allysha Chapman was named Louisiana Player of the Year, while her teammate Natalie Martineau was tabbed the state's top newcomer. McNeese State forward Johnna Germany was selected as Freshman of the Year. The All-Louisiana team was selected by the state's sports information directors.
