Bockhaus, Hornbuckle Lead Lady Lion All-Southland Contingent

Bockhaus, Cooper, Dagys, MacIntosh, Santana, Brannigan, Prieto, Stillians, Shaw all honored among league's best

2010 Southland Conference Player of the Year Lacey Bockhaus
HAMMOND – After leading Southeastern Louisiana to the Southland Conference regular season title, junior goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus was named the Southland Conference Player of the Year, while Lady Lion head coach Blake Hornbuckle was named the league's Coach of the Year on Tuesday, as the 2010 All-Southland Conference Women's Soccer Teams were announced by the league office.

Bockhaus, a native of San Leandro, Calif., shared the league's top honor with Stephen F. Austin sophomore midfielder Kylie Louw. Bockhaus is the fifth player in school history to be named Southland Player of the Year, joining former Lady Lions Ashlynn Yanko (1997), Allison Holliday (1998), Kendra Oney (2003) and Kari Yost (2006).

“This is an extremely appropriate honor for Lacey's body of work throughout the year,” Hornbuckle commented. “She has a fantastic field presence and thrives on competition. Lacey is imposing for attackers and has a calming presence in goal. We are thrilled to see her recognized.”

After leading his team to the program's fifth regular season title, Hornbuckle was named the Southland Coach of the Year for the third time in his career. Hornbuckle, who previously earned Southland Coach of the Year honors in 1999 and 2006, has a total of seven Coach of the Year awards to his credit, as he was the Louisiana Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2009. In his 13 years with the program, he's posted a 143-80-28 record.

“This is a shared honor,” Hornbuckle said. “Our student-athletes and staff all work together for the betterment of the program.”

For the second straight season, Southeastern placed a school-record five players on the All-Southland first team. Bockhaus was joined by sophomore forward Maiya Cooper, sophomore forward Karly Dagys, junior defender Kyle MacIntosh and senior midfielder Natalie Santana. Bockhaus, Cooper and Santana were all repeat first team All-Southland selections, giving the Lady Lions nine players in school history with multiple first team All-Southland appearances.

Senior defenders Nicole Brannigan and Brittany Prieto were both selected to the team as second team choices. Rounding out the Lady Lion All-Southland contingent were a pair of honorable mention selections – sophomore midfielder Lauren Stillians and freshman defender Shanyce Shaw.

Bockhaus finished the regular season atop the Southland Conference and among the national leaders with a 0.56 goals against average, .883 save percentage and nine shutouts. She only allowed four goals in conference play and holds the league career record with 30 shutouts.

Bockhaus was protected by the backline of All-Southland performers MacIntosh, Brannigan, Prieto and Shaw. The Lady Lion defense allowed only 11 goals during the regular season. Brannigan was named to the All-Southland team for the third straight season, while MacIntosh and Prieto made their second straight appearance.

“Our entire back line is very deserving of these honors,” Hornbuckle said. “Kyle and Nicole keep us organized and their leadership skills make a difference on the field. Kyle is strong in the air and gets us into the attack fast. Nicole is a ball winner with true courage and inspires her teammates with her attitude and drive.

“Brittany is an extremely intelligent player who shuts down attacking options and transitions into the attack well,” Hornbuckle added. “Shanyce has been a rock on the back line with her ability to match up 1-v-1, win balls in the air, get us into the attack and play with passion.”

Southeastern finished the regular season with 41 goals, thanks in large part to its prolific forward duo. For the second straight year, Cooper was named first team All-Southland after leading the Lady Lions with 10 goals. One of two players in school history with multiple double-digit goal seasons, the Hawthorne, Calif. native ranks among the school's career leaders with 24 goals (5th) and 56 points (8th).

An honorable mention All-Southland performer in 2009, Dagys was named to the first team All-Southland team for the first time after making her mark as a scorer and distributor. The Hamilton, Ont. native led the Southland Conference with nine assists and added six goals – including a league-high five goals versus Southland foes.

“Maiya and Karly have been a dangerous combination up top all year,” Hornbuckle stated. “Maiya possesses a high workrate and savvy ability to slip by defenders with her speed and decision making. Her finishing has played a major role in our success.

“Karly has a motor that does not quit,” Hornbuckle continued. “Her athletic ability and strength are hard for defenders to handle. She is relentless going to goal and is a consistent finisher. She's a big game performer.”

The Lady Lions were also productive in the midfield behind Santana and Stillians. Santana, a Cypress, Calif. native, finished the regular season with six goals and six assists. A three-time All-Southland pick and one of the school's career leaders with 24 goals (5th) and 74 points (4th), she is the Southland Conference's career leader with 26 assists.

Stillians, a Manhattan Beach, Calif. product, was solid in her first full season as a starter. She scored three goals and dished out three assists during the regular season.

“We've been extremely pleased with the play of Natalie and Lauren in the central midfield,” Hornbuckle said. “Natalie is very composed and orchestrates a large amount of our attack. Her ability to distribute and penetrate to goal add another dimension to the game. She's also a very good defender, winning balls and closing down space.

“Lauren's workrate and determination are difficult for most to match,” Hornbuckle added. “She is versatile in multiple roles on the field and plays each role very well.”

Southeastern earned two of the four individual league honors. Sam Houston State forward Tricia Mallory was named Freshman of the Year and Texas State goalkeeper Lauren Frazier was tabbed the league's top newcomer. The All-Southland teams and individual awards are voted on by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

As the top seed, Southeastern will receive a bye into the semifinals of Southland Conference Tournament, which begins Thursday in San Marcos, Texas. The Lady Lions will face the winner of Thursday's first round match between Texas State and Sam Houston State on Friday at 7 p.m.

The championship match is set for Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner receiving a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Lions won the league tournament in 2009 and made their first appearance in the NCAA College Cup.
