Hutchin's Hot Start Carries Southeastern Past Millsaps, 91-45

HAMMOND – Trent Hutchin scored Southeastern Louisiana's first 18 points, sinking five 3-pointers in the game's first 3:38 as the Lions opened with a 35-4 run and cruised past Millsaps College, 91-45, in the season opener Friday at the University Center.

Hutchin, who led all scorers with 21 points, finished 7-for-10 from the floor and 6-for-9 from behind the 3-point line as Southeastern (1-0) and shot 61 percent from the floor and built a 45-24 lead at halftime. The senior sank his first four shots, all from behind the 3-point line that was capped by a four-point play with 17:27 remaining in the first half for a 13-2 lead.

Hutchin made his fifth 3-pointer at the 16:22 mark and scored on a layup with 15:51 left before being replaced by Gary Dixon at the 14:37 mark.

Rodney Jones hit a 3-pointer that gave Southeastern a 23-3 lead and the Lions extended their lead to 35-4 on a jumper by David Ndoumba with 10:11 remaining in the first half.

Millsaps, an NCAA Division III school, got as close at 44-24 on a bucket by Nick Cortese with 37 seconds remaining in the first half before the Lions put the game away in the final period.

Hutchin scored his only points of the second half when his 3-pointer with 11:37 remaining capped a 17-5 run and gave Southeastern a 66-29 advantage. Dixon, who added 14 points off the bench for the Lions, pushed the lead to 73-33 on a three-point play with 8:40 remaining and the Lions took their biggest lead with Jonathan Curtis scored on a three-point play in the final seconds for the final margin.

Jones added 14 points for Southeastern, which improved to 13-0 against Millsaps and won its 21st straight non-conference game at home dating back to 2006-07. Roosevelt Johnson scored a career-high 11 points for the Lions, who forced 19 turnovers and blocked nine shots.

Ndoumba and Jason Marks each pulled down eight rebounds to lead Southeastern while Deshawn Patterson dished out seven assists. Freshman Michael Harrel added seven points, including two 3-pointers in his collegiate debut for Southeastern, which finished 33-for-54 (61.1 percent) from the floor and 14-for-23 (60.9 percent) from behind the 3-point line.

Cortese, a former St. Thomas More product, led Millsaps with 11 points with Taylor Meade and Aaron Caldwell adding seven points each. The Majors were held to 16-for-46 (34.8 percent) from the floor in the game and were 3-for-11 from behind the arc.

Southeastern will return to action on Wednesday when it travels west to face UNLV in a 9 p.m. CST contest.
