HAMMOND - The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team will close out its 2010 regular season schedule with a pair of home matches this week at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
After winning their last five matches, the Lady Lions (12-2-3, 5-1-1 Southland) can clinch at least a share of the Southland Conference regular season title with two victories. On Friday, Southeastern hosts Central Arkansas (6-7-3, 2-3-2 Southland) for a 3 p.m. match. Northwestern State (7-10-1, 2-4-1 Southland) comes to town for a 1 p.m. match on Sunday.
Prior to Friday's match, Southeastern will honor its three seniors –
Brittany Prieto,
Nicole Brannigan and
Natalie Santana – in a special Senior Day ceremony. The first 100 fans will receive a free t-shirt courtesy of Connie's Impressions/CI Sports. On Sunday, Southeastern will celebrate Halloween and any child in costume will receive free admission and candy if accompanied by a paying adult.
Southeastern put itself in a tie atop the Southland Conference standings with 1-0 road victories over Southland co-leader UTSA and two-time defending regular season champion Texas State. Junior goalkeeper
Lacey Bockhaus had 20 saves in the two shutout wins and was named the CS360 Division I National Primetime Player of the Week and the Southland Conference Goalkeeper of the Week.
Brannigan was selected as the Southland Defensive Player of the Week and sophomore
Karly Dagys, who scored the game-winning goal on Friday and assisted the game-winning score on Sunday, was named the league's Offensive Player of the Week.
Southeastern has scored 36 goals on the season and 12 different players have found the net. Sophomore
Maiya Cooper leads the team with eight goals, followed by Santana and freshman Cambri Prevost with five apiece. Dagys has scored four goals – including a team-high three in conference play – while sophomores
Kerry McWhirter and
Lauren Stillians have each scored three times this season.
Dagys is also the team's top distributor and leads the Southland Conference with eight assists. McWhirter follows with seven, while Santana has dished out six this season and is the Southland's career assists leader with 26. Prevost and Stillians have three assists apiece.
Southeastern has allowed only 10 goals through the first 17 matches of the season, thanks in large part to the play of Brannigan, Prieto, junior
Kyle MacIntosh and freshman
Shanyce Shaw on the back line. Bockhaus continues to thrive in goal, as the San Leandro, Calif. native leads the conference with a 0.57 goals against average, eight shutouts and a .885 save percentage. She also has recorded a Southland career record 29 shutouts in her career.
On Friday, Southeastern will be facing a UCA team looking to secure its first-ever Southland Conference Tournament berth. Junior Julie Foerster, sophomore Brittany Kemper and freshman Kristin Pollard share the team lead with three goals apiece and six Bears have dished out a team-high two assists. Sophomore Kelsey Gochnauer has excelled in goal and comes into the final week of the regular season with a 1.07 goals against average.
Southeastern is 3-1 all-time versus Central Arkansas. Last season, goals by Dagys, Cooper, Santana, sophomore
Megan Miller and former Lady Lion
Candice Wallace sent Southeastern to a 5-0 win in Conway, Ark.
Northwestern State, which plays at Nicholls on Friday, also is fighting to get into the league tournament. Freshmen Ashlee Savona and Pippi Haas are the team leaders with three goals apiece. Freshman Jessica Danku has handled the majority of work in goal and has a 1.50 goals against average.
Sunday's match will be the 28th meeting between the longtime Southland rivals with Southeastern holding a 16-10-1 advantage over the Lady Demons in the all-time series. Southeastern will be looking to avenge its only league loss of 2009 on Sunday, as Northwestern State defeated the Lady Lions, 1-0, last season in Natchitoches.
The Southland Conference Tournament awaits the Lady Lions following this weekend's action. The tournament runs Nov. 4-7 in San Marcos, Texas.
