Lady Lions Close Non-Conference Slate Versus Tulane

Southeastern looks to head into Southland play with strong showing against red-hot Green Wave

The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring Kelli Jenkins
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will close out its 2009-10 non-conference schedule on Monday, hosting in-state foe Tulane at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

Monday's contest between the Lady Lions (6-6) and the Green Wave (10-2) will be Southeastern's first after a 13-day layoff. The game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available.

Sophomore point guard Kelli Jenkins will be Monday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive a trading guard featuring the Plaquemine native, courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE (Positive Role-models Involved in the Development of Excellence).

A key reserve as a freshman, Kelli Jenkins led the Southland Conference in assist-to-turnover ratio for last season's Southland Conference East Division Championship squad. This season, she has stepped seamlessly into a starting role, ranking third in the Southland with 4.5 assists per game.

After topping 100 points in consecutive wins over Spring Hill (100-55) and Millsaps (113-53), the Lady Lion offense was stifled in a 72-27 loss to nationally-ranked LSU on Dec. 22. Senior guard Kim Edmonson had 10 points to lead Southeastern, but the Lady Lions put up its lowest scoring output in school history.

As a team, Southeastern heads into Monday's contest averaging 65.1 points per contest. Senior wing Quantae Thomas leads the team with 11.1 points per game, followed by Edmonson (8.7 ppg), junior guard Chelsea Hix (7.9 ppg), junior forward Rashima Jenkins (7.7 ppg) and Kelli Jenkins (7.3 ppg). Kelli Jenkins has been the team's top distributor, followed by freshman guard Erica Burgess, who averages 2.67 assists per outing.

Much of the Lady Lion offense has come from behind the arc, as Southeastern, which set a Southland Conference single-season record with 220 three-point field goals, is on pace to top 200 again this season and is second in the Southland Conference with 7.0 triples per contest. Hix (2.1, 5th), Thomas (1.8, 7th) and Edmonson (1.6, 8th) each rank among the league's most prolific outside shooters and have combined for 65 three-point field goals.

Southeastern enters Monday's game averaging 40.0 rebounds per contest and out-rebounding opponents by an average of 3.8 boards per game. Senior post Zevy Ivory leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per contest, followed by Thomas (5.3 rpg) and Rashima Jenkins (4.5 rpg).

Defensively, the Lady Lions rank second in the Southland Conference in scoring defense, holding opponents to 61.0 points and forcing 20.2 turnovers per game. Burgess leads the team with 17 steals, followed by Ivory (15), Hix (14) and Kelli Jenkins (14).

Ivory and junior center Kasia Gawor both rank in the league's top 10 in blocked shots. Ivory has a team-high 10 block shots to her credit, while Gawor has eight.

Southeastern will face a red-hot Tulane team on Monday, as the Green Wave extended their win streak to eight games with a 67-49 home win over Texas Tech in the finals of the Doubletree Classic on Dec. 29. Two of Southeastern's Southland Conference East Division rivals have been among Tulane's victims during its recent run. Stephen F. Austin dropped an 84-51 decision to the Green Wave on Dec. 20, while McNeese State was overwhelmed, 75-45, on Dec. 22.

Junior guard Danielle Nunn scored 15 points and was one of four players in double figures – along with freshman guard Olivia Grayson (13 points), junior guard Roshaunda Barnes (11) and junior guard Tiffany Aidoo (10) – in the win over TTU. Barnes also added a team-high six assists and was one of two players with four steals, along with senior guard Chassity Brown.

Tulane is averaging 71.5 points per game. Brown leads the team with 14.1 points per game, while junior forward Brittany Lindsey (11.5 ppg) joins her in double figures, but has not played since Dec. 4. Sophomore center Brett Benzio (9.5 ppg), Aidoo (8.8 ppg) and Grayson (8.8 ppg) are the other top scorers for the Green Wave. Barnes, Grayson and Brown all average over three assists per game.

The Lady Green Wave has had some minor troubles on the boards, being out-rebounded by 2.9 rebounds per game on the season. Benzio leads the team with 7.9 rebounds per game, while Lindsey is next with 4.0 boards per outing.

Defensively, Tulane is holding opponents to 58.2 points per game and forcing 24.3 turnovers per contest. Barnes and Brown have 38 and 37 steals, respectively. Benzio leads the team with 17 blocked shots on the year.

Southeastern is 6-11 all-time versus Tulane. The teams last met in the 2005-06 season with the Green Wave earning a 69-62 win in Hammond. The Lady Lions' victory in the series was during the 1986-87 season, as Southeastern earned a 69-63 win in the University Center.

The Lady Lions will face Southland West Division favorite Lamar on Saturday, opening league play with a 2 p.m. contest in Beaumont, Texas. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net.
