Babin, Beatty Pace Offense In Scrimmage

Defense collects six sacks and interception

Tyler Beatty completed 6 of 7 passes and rushed for a touchdown
HAMMOND – Quarterbacks Brian Babin and Tyler Beatty each engineered long touchdown drives as the Southeastern offense overcame a slow start against the Lion defense in a controlled scrimmage Saturday morning in Strawberry Stadium.

Babin finished 10-for-15 for 147 yards and a touchdown as the Southeastern offense scored twice on its final three drives. Beatty completed 6 of 7 passes for 51 yards and scored on a 1-yard touchdown plunge.

The majority of the 60-play scrimmage was controlled by the defense which collected six sacks – three by Lindsey Leavoy – and held on 10 of 11 third-down opportunities.

“I was really pleased with the defense today,” head coach Mike Lucas said. “We challenged them earlier in the week to come out and play with more enthusiasm and they did that. Our pass rush was able to put a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks and we did a good job of swarming to the football.”

Babin led the offense to its first score of the day as he directed an eight-play, 65-yard drive. The senior connected with Chris Wilson for a 15-yard pass to midfield and connected with Andre Cryer on a 19-yard pass on second-and-9. Completions of 11 and 5 yards to Wilson and a 5-yard toss to Cryer moved the ball to the defense's 9-yard line and Babin found Simmie Yarborough in the left corner of the end zone on the next play.

Beatty took over on the next possession and drove the Lions 65 yards in 11 plays. Beatty connected with Kory Theodore on passes of 15 and 6 yards before Johnny Owen gained 8 yards on third-and-3 that gave the offense the ball at the 34. Freshman Shane Andrus rushed for 6 yards to the 23 on second-and-5 before Beatty hit Theodore for a 9-yard pass and Andrus gained 8 yards for a first-down to the 11.

Andrus caught a 10-yard pass from Beatty on the next play which moved the ball to the 1 and Beatty scored on the next play to close out the drive.

Ryan Godare led the defense with seven tackles while David Durden and Curtis Strong added five each. Mark Newbill, Ryan Anderson and Brian Reynolds each collected sacks for the defense while Craig Duronslet picked off a Babin pass on the scrimmage's final play.

Southeastern, which opens its season Sept. 5 at home against Texas A&M-Commerce, will return to practice on Monday when it holds a 7 p.m. workout in Strawberry Stadium.
