Second-Seeded Lions Prepare for SLC Tournament

After disappointing weekend, Southeastern looks to bounce back at league tournament

The Lions will try to battle for their first ever SLC crown.
HAMMOND - With the most successful Southland Conference regular season in school history now in officially in the books, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (35-20, 21-12 SLC) now turns its attention toward the league championship touranment at Whataburger Field in Corpus Christi, Texas.

The second-seeded Lions will open the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday at noon against No. 7 seed Sam Houston State (32-22, 18-14 SLC).  The Lions, making their fourth appearance at the league tournament since joining the SLC prior to the 1998 season, will look to take advantage of the program's best-ever seeding.

Southeastern had never finished better in the SLC standings, or subsequently drawn a better seed, than sixth prior to 2009's second-place finish.  The Lions went 12-3 over their final 15 games to set a new school record for SLC wins (21) and lock up the No. 2 seed.

The Lions will face a tough task in their opening draw of the conference tournament, squaring off against a Bearkat team that has won the last two SLC Tournaments.  However, after sweeping Sam Houston State in Huntsville, Texas April 24-26, the Lions will look to pick up where they left off against the Bearkats.

A win in Wednesday's contest would pit the Lions against the winner of No. 3 Texas-San Antonio and No. 6 Northwestern State on Thursday at 4 p.m.  A loss would pit Southeastern against the loser of that contest at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Live stats and streaming audio play-by-play for every pitch of the Lions' SLC Tournament games will be available online at www.LionSports.net, and the game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM.
