Big innings for UTA lead to 9-0 Lion loss

Freshman right hander Josh Janway allowed just three hits on Sunday.
Box Score

ARLINGTON, Texas - Freshman right hander Josh Janway pitched well early on, allowing just three hits over 4.1 innings.  However, a five-run fifth put Texas-Arlington (16-14, 9-6 SLC) out in front as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (19-10, 10-5 SLC) was shut out of its bid to complete a three-game sweep of the Mavericks thanks to a 9-0 setback on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions came into Sunday having won the first two games of the series by scores of 8-6 on Friday and 1-0 on Saturday to ensure a series victory.  However, a strong outing by UTA lefthander Ryan Robinson ended Southeastern's hopes for a sweep.

Robinson picked up his first complete game shutout of the season, limiting the Lions to eight hits over nine innings while walking just one batter and striking out one.

Three Lion batters: sophomore catcher Josh Cryer, senior right fielder Brandon Street and freshman shortstop Justin Boudreaux each recorded two hits.  However, it wasn't enough for the Lions to get on the board.  When Southeastern threatened, the UTA defense responded.  The Mavericks turned three double plays on the afternoon to help keep the Lions in check.

With Robinson in control, Janway matched the UTA starter through the first four innings.  The freshman from Parkview Baptist in Baton Rouge allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out three through the first 4.1 innings.

Janway pitched out of james in the second, when he induced a 6-4-3 double play to end a two-men-on, one-man-out threat, and in the fourth, when he loaded the bases with one out only to get a pair of harmless flyouts to end the inning.

After four innings, the Lions and Mavericks went to the fifth scoreless.  However, the Mavericks broke up the pitchers' duel in the bottom half of that frame.

After hitting the leadoff batter, recording a strikeout and allowing a walk, head coach Jay Artigues removed Janway with one out in the fifth and runners at first and second.  Senior right hander Ryan Collins came on and allowed three runs on one hit, a walk and a hit batsmen, while allowing both inherited runners to score.

After just 0.1 innings, junior left hander Shawn Herring came on in relief of Collins.  Herring allowed a bases-loaded triple to the first batter he faced before a two-out walk and a popup to first ended the inning with Southeastern trailing 5-0.

The Mavericks added three more in the sixth as Herring allowed five hits in the frame before giving way to senior right hander Chris Cappo, who recorded the final out of the sixth.

UTA added one more in the seventh to finish the scoring for the final 9-0 margin.

Southeastern will return to action when the Lions return home to host Alcorn State for a midweek contest on Tuesday night.  First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.  Live stats and streaming audio play-by-play will be available online at www.LionSports.net, and the game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM.
