Lions Rout Jackson State to Secure Season Sweep

HAMMOND - Jackson State (32-19) scored early with four runs in the first, but the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (29-17) scored more often in a 20-6 win over the Tigers on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

The Lions pounded out 19 hits over nine innings after falling behind 4-0 in the first. The victory stretches Southeastern's winning streak to five games, extends the Lions winning streak over the Tigers to seven, and gives Southeastern its 17th come-from-behind win of the season.

The Tigers struck first as five hits and two Lion errors led to four first inning runs.  However, Southeastern regrouped in the bottom of the second by scoring three times to make it 4-3 after two.

The Lions took the lead for good by erupting for eight runs in the bottom of the third.  Southeastern notched just five hits in the inning, but took advantage of a Tiger error and three walks.

Sophomore first baseman Joe Sparacino had the biggest hit with a three-run homer, the first of his NCAA Division I career, as the Lions went up 11-4 after three.

The Tigers crept closer with two more runs in the fourth, but Southeastern stepped on the gas with four more in the fourth, four in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

Redshirt freshman right hander Justin Schneider worked 2.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief.  The Grace King HS product walked three and struck out two en route to a 1-0 record.

The Lions will return to action when they resume conference play against Nicholls State on Friday.  First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.  Game two will take place at Ray Didier Field in Thibodaux on Saturday before the two in-state rivals conclude the three-game series in Hammond at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
