HAMMOND -
The Lions scored in the bottom of the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, however it wasn't enough for the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (22-15, 11-9 Southland Conference) as the Texas A&M Corpus Christi Islanders (14-25, 6-14 SLC) withstood Southeastern's late charge by handing the Lions a 7-4 loss on Saturday and even the series at one game apiece.

After a scoreless first inning, the Islanders claimed a lead with a two run homer from Justin Greiner in the top of the second.

The Lions answered in the bottom half of the second as junior right fielder Philip Freeman singled home a run to make it 2-1 after two.

Unfortunately, for the Lions, the Islanders added two more runs in the top of the third and another in the top of the fifth to make it 5-1.

Islander left handed starter Roy Ferdin kept Southeastern off the board in the third and fourth, but the Lions added another run in the bottom of the fifth on an a run-scoring groundout from senior second baseman Ty Summerlin to make it 5-2 heading to the sixth.

After Southeastern left handed reliever Shawn Herring held the Islanders off the board in the sixth, the Lions pulled to within two as senior left fielder Brandon Street came home on a sacrifice fly from sophomore first baseman Joe Sparacino to make it 5-3 after six.

The Islanders added one more in the seventh and another in the ninth to reclaim a four-run lead, and the Lions headed to a do-or-die ninth down 7-3.

Southeastern tried to mount a rally against TAMUCC closer Trey Hernandez.  Junior designated hitter Chris Ernest singled through the right side to lead things off and came home to score on a double off the bat of freshman right fielder Cody Gougler.

Freshman shortstop Justin Boudreaux grounded out to advance Gougler to third.  Summerlin followed by drawing a walk to put runners at the corners with one out.

Sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis came to the plate representing the tying run, but the Meraux, La. native popped out to short right field for the second out.  Street followed with a ground out to end the game with the Lions down 7-4.

The Lions will look to claim their fifth SLC series win in the rubber match between the two schools on Sunday.  First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
