SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Six Lion batters recorded multi-hit games as part of a 14 hit attack and the Lion bullpen held on to quell a late rally as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (7-5, 1-2 Southland Conference) rallied for a win over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners (8-4, 2-1 SLC) by a 9-8 margin on Sunday to pick up their first conference win and avoid a sweep at the hands of the defending SLC champions.
Freshman right hander Josh Janway threw 5.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs to a UTSA lineup that scored 25 runs in the first two games of the series. The Baton Rouge native and Parkview Baptist product improved to 3-0 in his first weekend start.
The Lions got on the board first as sophomore center fielder Cass Hargis led off the top of the first by getting hit by a pitch. After stealing second, Hargis came around to score on a two-out single by sophomore catcher Josh Cryer as Southeastern jumped out to an early 1-0 lead.
The Roadrunners rallied in the bottom of the first with a pair of unearned runs and took a 3-1 lead after two. However, Janway settled in and kept UTSA off the board in the third, fourth and fifth.
The Southeastern offense reclaimed the lead in the top of the third as senior left fielder Brandon Street launched his second home run of the season. The three-run shot over the left center field wall plated Hargis and senior shortstop Ty Summerlin and staked Southeastern to a 4-3 lead.
Southeastern added one more in the fourth as a pair of walks and a UTSA error led to a 5-4 Lion lead.
The Roadrunners cut into the Lion lead in the sixth as three consecutive hits chased Janway from the game. However, senior right hander Ryan Collins came on to record the final three outs and limit the damage to one run as the Lions held a 5-4 lead heading into the seventh.
The Southeastern lineup broke through in a big way in the seventh as five hits, including a two run double from junior third baseman Chris Franklin gave the Lions a 9-4 advantage.
UTSA struck back in the eighth as a pair of runs came after three consecutive two-out hits. However, Collins induced an inning-ending pop-up to limit the damage and head to the ninth with a 9-6 lead.
The Roadrunners threatened once again in the ninth as a one-out home run from Lance Brown made it 9-7. After a walk to pinch-hitter Aaron Powell, the Lions brought in Franklin to close things out.
After retiring Tyler Carpenter with a swinging strikeout for the second out, consecutive singles scored Powell and brought the Roadrunners to within one.
After hitting Jose Hernandex with a pitch to load the bases, Franklin made Matthew James his second strikeout victim of the inning to preserve a dramatic 9-8 victory for the Lions.
Southeastern will return to action on Tuesday when they host in-state rival LSU. First pitch at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field is set for 6 p.m.
