Lion rally falls short in series finale

CONWAY, Ark. – After clinching a series win with victories in their first two games against Central Arkansas (12-9, 5-4 Southland Conference), the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (14-7, 6-3 SLC) tried to rally for a sweep of the Bears on Sunday.  However, after tying things up, UCA pulled away to snap the Lions' season-best seven-game winning streak by handing Southeastern a 9-5 loss on Sunday in Conway, Ark.

The Bears struck first with a three-run homer from Richey Irvin in the bottom of the first.  However, the Lions, who have claimed 13 come-from-behind wins on the year, answered with a three spot of their own in the top of the second.

Sophomore catcher Josh Cryer started things off with his 12th hit by pitch of the season.  Senior right fielder Brian McCants followed with a base hit and junior third baseman Chris Franklin moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt.

An RBI groundout from freshman designated hitter Cody Gougler got the Lions on the board.

After sophomore first baseman Joe Sparacino was hit by a pitch to put runners at second and third, freshman shortstop Justin Boudreaux drilled a two-out RBI single to make it 3-2.

With runners at the corners and two out, Boudreaux was picked off.  Fortunately for the Lions, the Prairieville native kept the rundown going long enough to allow Sparacino to score from third and tie the score at 3-3 after two.

Both starting pitchers found their strides after that as feshman right hander Josh Janway of Southeastern and UCA's Bobby Pritchett kept both lineups off the board.

Janway retired eight consecutive batters at one point and pitched out of a jam by stranding a pair of runners in the fourth.  The true freshman went 5.0 innings, allowing just five hits and two walks while striking out three.

However, Janway ran into trouble in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs.  Head coach Jay Artigues brought in senior right hander Ryan Collins, but Central Arkansas was able to capitalize with three consecutive base hits.  After a pair of outs, a two-out two-run homer from Tye Throneberry capped the scoring for the inning to put the Lions down 9-3 after six.

Southeastern rallied in the top of the eighth as a one-out double from senior second baseman Ty Summerlin set the stage for a two-out pinch-hit run-scoring single by junior infielder Chris Ernest and an RBI double from McCants made it 9-5.

Unfortunately, that's all the Lions were able to muster against the Central Arkansas bullpen as UCA right hander Matt Humphrey kept Southeastern scoreless over the final 1.1 innings.

The Lions will return to action when they visit Mississippi Valley State for a 3 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday.
