HAMMOND - Senior shortstop Ty Summerlin tied the school career hits record and freshman designated hitter Cody Gougler extended his hitting streak to seven games with his third consecutive two-hit affair, but the Southeastern pitching staff allowed 12 walks and the Lion defense committed four errors as the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team (7-6, 1-2 Southland Conference) fell to the No. 3/4 LSU Tigers (11-2) on Tuesday night at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
"The bottom line is, when you walk 12 guys and make four errors it doesn't matter who you play," head coach Jay Artigues said. "We keep swinging the bats well, but we have to stop the other side. (LSU head coach) Paul (Mainieri) does a great job with that program, but I just wish we could have done a better job tonight."
LSU opened the scoring with one in the first off of the Lions' starter, junior lefthander Shawn Herring. However, Southeastern rallied in the bottom of the first as an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Josh Cryer plated Summerlin and Brandon Street came home on the same play by way of a throwing error by LSU center fielder Leon Landry.
Herring found his stride in the second and third by keeping the Tigers off the board in both innings. However, a six run fourth inning gave LSU a lead they would not relinquish. The Tigers recorded just two hits, but took advantage of five walks and a Lion error en route to a 7-2 lead after three and a half.
After the Tigers plated two more in the top of the fifth, the Lions managed to push a run across on an RBI single by junior third baseman Chris Franklin to make it 9-3 after five.
However, LSU answered in the sixth inning with four more runs coming on three homers. Two more runs in the top of the eighth made it a 14-3 LSU lead before Southeastern managed a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth to make it 14-5.
That was as close as Southeastern would get, however, as LSU added one more in the top of the ninth to make it 16-5.
The Lions will now prepare to return to their Southland Conference schedule when they host McNeese State for a three game series beginning on Friday. First pitch for game one is set for 6 p.m. at Pat Kenelly at Alumni Field.
NOTES
Ty Summerlin's third inning single was the 210th hit of his career, tying him with Macky Waguespack for first place on the all-time list. The Vancleave, Miss. native will try to become the Lions' all-time hit king against McNeese State on Friday.
With both Southeastern's men's and women's basketball teams competing at the 2009 Southland Conference Tournament, the broadcast schedule for Lion baseball remains in flux.
Should the men's team win it's first round game on Friday, the Lions will play in the tournament semifinals at 8:30 p.m.; meaning Southeastern baseball will not be heard that night. Should the men's basketball team lose in Wednesday's first round game, Lion baseball will be on the air Friday night at 6 p.m. on KSLU 90.9 FM in Hammond and online at www.LionSports.net.
