Southeastern Falls Short in Southland Match at UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana senior Lauren Mayer narrowly missed a double-double with a match-high 10 kills and nine digs, but the Lady Lions could not overcome UT Arlington, dropping a 25-19, 25-17, 29-27 decision in Southland Conference volleyball action Thursday night in Texas Hall.

The Lady Lions (6-13, 2-6 SLC) were held to a .062 hitting percentage and dropped their sixth consecutive match. The home-standing Mavs improved to 8-12 overall and 4-4 in league action.

Mayer, senior Jessica Srajer (seven kills) and junior Allison Jones (six kills) were the top attackers for the Lady Lions on Thursday. Sophomore Arianne Cruckshank posted a double-double with a match-high 31 assists and 10 digs.

Cruckshank was one of three Lady Lions with double-digit digs, as senior Margaret Pittman and junior Alex Greer led Southeastern with 13 digs each. Southeastern finished with five total team blocks, as freshman Courtney Donald had four block assists, while Srajer and Cruckshank chipped in with two apiece.

Christy Driscoll and Emily Shearin led UT Arlington with seven kills, while Amanda Aguilera was credited with six winners for the Mavs, who hit .120 for the match. Raegan Daniel posted a team-high 21 assists for UTA.

UTA's defensive effort made the difference, as the Mavs finished with 15 total team blocks. Shearin was credited with eight block assists, while Driscoll chipped in one solo block and five blocked assists. Alicia Shaffer led all players with 20 digs, while teammate Bianca Sauls chipped in 13 digs.

In the opening set, a kill by Donald gave Southeastern an early 8-7 lead. UTA bounced back with an 8-1 run, capped by an ace by Aguilera to take a 15-9 lead. The Lady Lions never got closer than three the rest of the way and fell, 25-19.

UTA forced Southeastern to hit -.053 in the second set. The Mavs took a 2-0 lead into the break after a 25-17 win in the second set.

The third set was the most competitive of the match, featuring 13 ties and seven lead changes. Southeastern took its last lead at 26-25, but UTA scored four of the last five points of the set to close out the match.

Southeastern will return to action on Saturday, facing Southland foe Texas State at 2 p.m. in San Marcos, Texas.
