LADY LION VOLLEYBALL HEADS TO SOUTHERN MISS

Southeastern volleyball back in action after ten day layoff

The Lady Lion Volleyball team returns to action after a ten day layoff on Tuesday night
Hammond -  After a ten day layoff and a pair of postponements the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (0-1) will return to action at Southern Miss (6-0) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

The sudden match time is just the latest example of schedule juggling by head coach Julie Langford and her program.  After losing a hard-fought decision 3-1 to South Alabama on Aug. 30, the Lady Lions agreed to postpone their Sept. 2 match in Hattiesburg, Miss with the Golden Eagles due to Hurricane Gustav.

When Gustav caused damage to Southern's facilities in Baton Rouge, the Lady Jaguars and Southeastern consented to postponing that Sept. 9 match until yet-to-be-determined date, which opened an opportunity for a make-up date with Southern Miss.

However, despite the scheduling issues, and week-long evacuation detour to Wesley College in Florence, Miss., Langford says her squad has found its rhythm and is ready for a tough test with an undefeated Southern Miss squad.

"We haven't missed a single practice due to the storm," Langford said.  "I'm grateful to Wesley College for accommodating us.  We had some good, hard practices and it got a little emotional at times because our girls thoughts were understandably elsewhere, but it really helped us focus and bring us closer together.  It really helped us find and stay in our rhythm.  I wish the storm never happened, but given the circumstances, I'm pleased with how are team dealt with it."

With Hurricane Gustav behind them, the Lady Lions are now ready to focus on volleyball once again; and after a four-set rally against South Alabama came up just short, the Lady Lions are anxious to face Southern Miss.

"Southern Miss is going to be a tough challenge," Langford said.  "They're a strong program and they get stronger every year.  We know that they're off to a 6-0 start and they swept two three-match tournaments to start the season.  So we have our work cut out for us, but I think we're prepared."

The Lady Lions and Golden Eagles will get underway at 7 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg, Miss.  Live stats will be available on www.lionsports.net and www.southernmiss.com.
