HAMMOND, La. – In the Southeastern Louisiana University Volleyball team's first of four home matches this week, the Lions dropped a four-set contest to Southern University, 25-23, 26-24, 18-25, 25-18, in the University Center Tuesday.
SLU (1-5) dropped the first two sets against the Jaguars (1-3), then claimed the third set shortly after. Southern, however, managed to capture the win in the fourth set.
Gracie Brown (11),
Kyra McKelvey (10), and
Ainsley Driska (10) all recorded double-digit kills in the match.
Ashley Richardson tallied 37 assists, while
Lindsey Wickersham served a trio of aces for a career-high. Libero
Audrey Vielguth led the Lions with a dozen digs, while Richardson came just short of a double-double with nine. Driska also posted a career-high seven blocks to lead the match.
Southern's top three attackers, Sereniti Johnson (11), Mariah Mott (10), and Zaria Nelson (10), shared the same kill numbers as SLU's top three. Maleah Faust led all players Tuesday with 39 assists. Najah Harris led the Jaguars on the defensive end with a match-high 18 digs. Paulina Agudelo Marin was Southern's blocks leader, notching four on the night.
The Lions are set to host the Southeastern Showdown at the University Center, beginning Friday, Sept. 11, and running through Sunday, Sept. 13. Southeastern will start the tourney with a double-header against Texas Southern at 12 p.m., and Charlotte at 7 p.m. The weekend will end when SLU hosts LSU Sunday at 2 p.m. All of SLU's matches during the weekend will be televised on ESPN+.
