HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University Volleyball team closed the Southeastern Showdown Sunday, battling in a hard-fought loss to LSU, 26-24, 25-13, 25-21, in the University Center.
Southeastern (3-6) fell to LSU (4-3) in a three-set match, in which the Lions traded blows with the Tigers. The match featured 27 ties and seven lead changes between the two teams.
Kyra McKelvey's 12 kills led the Lions, while
Abigail Bailey trailed closely behind with eight kills.
Ashley Richardson ended the match with 23 assists.
Audrey Vielguth paced SLU with 14 digs, one off the match-leading mark. McKelvey and
Keira Beverly each posted a trio of blocks.
LSU's Jurnee Robinson led the match with 18 kills, with Camryn Jeffery (11) also reaching double digits offensively. Takyla Brown (26) and Lauren Brooker (15) notched assists in the double figures. Kiley Brooks owned the match-leading 15 digs. Jessica Jones paced all players in the match with six blocks.
The opening set of Sunday's match included 17 ties and three lead changes. After the Tigers scored back-to-back points late in the set, back-to-back kills by McKelvey evened the score, 24-24. LSU managed to win the set, however, with two points.
After LSU found its footing in the second set, Southeastern fought back in the third. Kills by
Ainsley Driska and Bailey helped the Lions start with a 4-1 lead. After 10 ties, LSU found a three-point advantage and remained ahead to secure the win.
The Lions will play one more home match before returning to the road. SLU will host UL Lafayette Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the University Center. The match will be televised on ESPN+.
Tuesday's match against the Ragin' Cajuns will feature Dig the Lions night. The first 100 students to attend the match will receive a free T-shirt and food.
