McKelvey, Richardson Tabbed SLC Players of the Week

Southeastern has won a Southland weekly award in each of the last five weeks

FRISCO, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University volleyball team was honored by the Southland Conference Monday, when the league office announced Kyra McKelvey and Ashley Richardson were named SLC Players of the Week.

After a split week, ending with a four-set win at Nicholls on Saturday, the Lions (13-12, 10-2 SLC) remain in the competition for first place in the Southland Conference. McKelvey and Richardson have been key players for SLU this season, also putting together match-leading performances last week. Monday is the first time SLU has won two weekly awards this season.

McKelvey has won Offensive Player of the Week three times in the last five weeks. Monday's weekly accolade is the sixth SLC weekly award of her career. The Navarre, Fla. native has been on a tear this season, leading the conference with 341 kills and averaging the fourth-most kills-per-set (3.48) in the SLC.

Last week, the senior totaled 41 kills, nine blocks, and 17 digs. McKelvey posted match-highs in both games, notching 23 at McNeese and 18 against Nicholls. Her 41 kills are tied for the most kills through a two-match stretch in her career.

After being named an Honorable Mention for Setter of the Week last week, Richardson added her first career weekly award. The junior is Southeastern's first SLC Setter of the Week since Gracie Duplechein won the award three times in 2023. Richardson has been among the top setters in the league, posting fourth-best SLC marks in total assists (663) and assists per set (7.99)

The League City, Texas, native collected 88 assists, 22 digs, 10 kills, and three aces last week. Richardson added her 11th double-double of the season with 45 assists and 14 digs against the Cowgirls. She followed that up by tallying 43 assists and eight digs in the win against the Colonels.

With 88 assists last week, Richardson posted the most setups through a two-match stretch of her career. Richardson was also efficient at the net, averaging a .381 hitting percentage last week, while chipping in 10 kills against SLU's two Southland foes.

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, McKelvey, Richardson, and the Lions will enter the seventh week of Southland Conference play on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. SLU will host LSU New Orleans in the University Center on Tuesday, before visiting the Privateers in New Orleans, La., for a 6:30 p.m. matchup on Thursday. The matches will be televised on ESPN+.

Tuesday's home match against the Privateers will be Residential Life Rivalry night at the University Center. Fans are encouraged to represent their hall by wearing their colors and competing to see who brings the loudest energy on campus.
