SOUTHEASTERN FINISHES IN 2-2 DEADLOCK WITH TROY

Lady Lions run their record to 1-0-1

HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's soccer team opened a 2-0 halftime lead, but Troy rallied back with two goals of its own to force a tie with the Lady Lions in non-conference action Friday afternoon at the Troy Soccer Complex.

The Lady Lions (1-0-1) remained unbeaten and out-shot the Trojans, 17-6. Southeastern junior Candice Wallace scored her second goal of the season for the Lady Lions, while senior Kristin McDonald closed out the Southeastern scoring with her third goal of the year. Troy also moved its record to 1-0-1 on the season.

Though pleased with the team's effort, Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle was disappointed in the team's execution on both sides of the field.

“We had numerous opportunities to open things up, but we failed to take advantages of the chances we had,” Hornbuckle commented. “We spent the majority of the match on their side of the field, but they took advantage of the opportunities we gave them and that was the difference in us leaving with a win and them holding us to a tie.

“We did see some positive things that we can build on as the season progresses,” Hornbuckle added. “We learned an early lesson about putting opponents away when we have a chance, avoiding mental lapses and executing when we have opportunities. We have a chance to be a very good team, but soccer is a game of cruel results and one missed opportunity can make all the difference.”

In addition to the play of McDonald and Wallace, Hornbuckle also praised several other Lady Lions for their individual performances.

Dana Mayer played very well in the central midfield for us today. She distributed well and won a lot of balls,” Hornbuckle said. “We were also very pleased with the effort of Sarah Cheung in the back.”

Southeastern jumped on top right away with a score in the 4th minute. Wallace took a feed from McDonald to give Southeastern a 1-0 lead. The goal was Wallace's 14th of her career, moving her past former Lady Lion Danielle Shank into eighth place on the school's career list.

The Lady Lions padded their lead in the 17th minute. McDonald drilled a penalty kick past Troy goalkeeper Ashley Branham to put the Lady Trojans in a 2-0 hole.

Southeastern could not get another score for the remaining 28 minutes of the half, despite out-shooting Troy, 8-1, in the initial 45 minutes.

Nine minutes into the second half, Troy broke through. Nicole Targa sent a shot past Southeastern freshman goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus. The goal was the first collegiate score allowed by Bockhaus, who finished the match with two saves.

Troy knotted the score less than 10 minutes later. Katie Cooper found an open Jill Pinder, who put the ball in the net to knot the score at 2.

Southeastern managed six shots on goal in the second half, but Branham, who finished with six saves. The teams managed one shot on goal apiece in the two overtime periods.

Southeastern's scheduled match on Sunday at South Alabama has been postponed due to the predicted landfall of Hurricane Gustav. The Lady Lions are scheduled to face Grambling on Friday, Sept. 5 at the Southeastern Soccer Complex.
